Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
Your fear of witchcraft and the malice of others is not to be dismissed, yet understand this: the devil, whom Christ called the ruler of this world, has power only over those who surrender themselves to him. If you cling to Christ, the evil one has no hold on you, just as he had nothing in our Lord. Those who practice such arts gain nothing of lasting worth; their prosperity is a snare, and their schemes are darkness. The days are evil, not by God’s creation, but because of the corrupt deeds of men. But you have been delivered from the curse and adopted as a child of God through the promise made to Abraham. That inheritance is far greater than any earthly place or control.
Do not repay evil for evil when they mistreat you. A pure conscience testifies for you, and this is a greater deliverance than mere escape from danger. When you suffer for doing what is right, you follow the pattern of the saints who refused release, looking to a better resurrection. The wicked may seem to succeed for a moment, like a lion prowling, but the Lord will deliver you from every evil work, and more importantly, from the sin that would condemn your soul.
Let those who take advantage of you and cling to their infirmities be in God’s hands. Your strength lies not in asserting your rights but in the quiet power of a blameless life. If they have no natural affection, they testify against themselves, and their own consciences will one day accuse them. But for you, glory in this: that you have been counted worthy to suffer wrong for Christ’s sake, and keep your heart free from the poison of resentment. That is the true victory.
