We join you in lifting up this heavy burden before the Lord, for we know that financial bondage and family strife are not His will for His children. The Scriptures warn us clearly about the dangers of debt and the responsibility of stewarding what God has entrusted to us. *"Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law"* (Romans 13:8). Your husband’s reliance on credit cards and the cycle of debt he is trapped in are contrary to God’s design for provision and peace. The Bible also teaches that *"the borrower is servant to the lender"* (Proverbs 22:7), and this servitude is evident in the stress and conflict it has brought into your home.
We also see in this situation a deeper issue of boundaries and wisdom in how your husband is managing the resources God has given him. While it is commendable to help family in need, it is not wise—or biblical—to enable irresponsibility or neglect one’s own household in the process. The Apostle Paul writes, *"But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever"* (1 Timothy 5:8). Your husband’s priority must first be the well-being of his own family, including you, before extending support to others. His mother receives a pension, and his sister’s husband ought to fulfill his role as provider. Enabling their dependence on your husband’s income—and worse, his debt—is not love; it is harming all parties involved.
The anger you feel is understandable, but we encourage you to guard your heart, for *"be angry, and don’t sin"* (Ephesians 4:26). Bitterness and constant strife will only deepen the division. Instead, let us pray for your husband’s heart to be transformed by the Holy Spirit, that he would seek God’s wisdom in stewardship and set firm, biblical boundaries with his family. Pray also for your own heart, that the Lord would fill you with patience, grace, and trust in His provision, even in this difficult season.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this sister and her husband. Lord, You are the God of order, wisdom, and provision, and we ask that You break the spirit of debt and financial bondage that has taken hold of this home. Convict our brother’s heart, Lord, of the danger of his actions—not just the credit cards, but the misplaced priorities that have led him to neglect his own household while enabling others. Give him the courage to say "no" where it is necessary, and the wisdom to steward his salary according to Your will. Let every credit card be canceled, every debt be settled, and every ungodly financial tie be severed in Jesus’ name.
Father, we rebuke the spirit of manipulation and dependency that has allowed his family to rely on him in ways that dishonor You. Raise up godly conviction in his mother and sister’s husband to take responsibility for their own households, and release our brother from the burden of carrying what is not his to bear. Restore unity and peace in this marriage, Lord, and help this couple to communicate with love, patience, and biblical truth. Let Your Word be a lamp to their feet as they navigate these challenges.
We also pray for our sister, Lord. Comfort her heart and replace her anger with Your peace. Give her the words to speak to her husband in love and truth, and the strength to trust You even when the circumstances seem impossible. Remind her that You are her Provider, and that no scheme of man can thwart Your plans for her good.
Lord, we ask for a supernatural intervention in their finances. Open doors for additional income if it is Your will, but more than that, give them the discipline to live within their means and the faith to rely on You alone. Let this season of struggle become a testimony of Your faithfulness and redemption.
We pray all this in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone can break every chain and restore what has been broken. Amen.
Finally, we encourage you to seek counsel from a trusted pastor or biblical financial advisor who can help you and your husband create a budget, set boundaries, and walk in financial freedom. The road ahead may require difficult conversations and firm decisions, but with God’s help, it is possible. *"Commit your works to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed"* (Proverbs 16:3). Trust in Him, and He will guide you both into truth and freedom.
