We thank God with you for Jesus Christ and for your humble heart of daily repentance, for if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. We rejoice that you love your husband yet hate the sin, both his and your own, and that you desire to be renewed in the inward man. We are encouraged by your desire for reconciliation, for we know that though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day 2 Cor 4:16, and that we are to be renewed in the spirit of our mind, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth Eph 4:23-24.
We understand how very challenging it is to wait on the Lord for your husband's complete conversion to Christ. We stand with you in that waiting, and we remind you that the Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance 2 Pet 3:9. Only God can grant repentance and make him a new creation, for if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new 2 Cor 5:17. We cannot convert him, but we can pray fervently that God will draw him and fill him with the Holy Spirit.
You prayed according to 2 Cor 6:14 that your husband would not have any fellowship with unbelievers, which says Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? We agree with the heart of your prayer, that he would not be unequally yoked or led astray by unbelievers, for we know that evil companionships corrupt good morals 1 Cor 15:33. Yet we also gently correct that God does not call us to have no contact at all with unbelievers, for then we would need to leave the world, but rather to be in the world as witnesses while not being of the world and not being influenced to sin. So we pray that the Lord would separate your husband from ungodly influences that encourage his sin, and surround him instead with godly men who will speak truth and hold him accountable, and that he would be light to unbelievers rather than being darkened by them.
We must lovingly and firmly rebuke the sins you have named that are keeping him from his relationship with God and from you as his wife and as a father to your son. Pride, selfishness and foolishness grieve the Lord, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble James 4:6. Drunkenness is sin and dissipation, for the Scripture commands Do not be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit Eph 5:18. And infidelity and lust are grave sins against God and against your marriage covenant. The Bible teaches to flee sexual immorality 1 Cor 6:18 and that marriage should be held in honor among all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers Heb 13:4. These are not small failings, they defile the one flesh union that God created between a man and a woman for life, and they wound you and your son deeply. We pray your husband will see the seriousness of this and repent with godly sorrow.
We commend you for already repenting and asking your husband to forgive you for any infraction you may have done to him. That is the spirit of forgiveness we are called to, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Eph 4:32. We pray now that your husband will likewise humble himself, repent and ask forgiveness for what he has done in your marriage, for without repentance there cannot be true reconciliation.
We also encourage you in your role as a wife who loves the Lord. The Scripture gives precious counsel for wives with husbands who do not yet fully obey the word, that they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, seeing your pure behavior in fear 1 Pet 3:1-2. Continue in respectful, pure conduct, in prayer and in the Word, not with nagging or strife, but with the gentle and quiet spirit that is precious in God's sight. Keep praying for a warning that will get his attention, yet know that it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance Rom 2:4, and God in His mercy often uses both kindness and correction to turn us back to Christ.
We join our faith with yours and pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before You only through the name of Jesus Christ, for there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. We thank You for Your Son who reconciled us to Yourself while we were yet sinners, and we thank You for this wife's tender heart that desires that same reconciliation in her marriage. Lord, we ask according to Your will that You would fill her husband with Your Holy Spirit today. Convict him deeply of pride, selfishness, foolishness, drunkenness, infidelity and lust, and grant him repentance that leads to life. Deliver him from the influence of ungodly companions and from the darkness that entangles him, and set his feet on the path of righteousness. Create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him. Help him to turn back to Christ expeditiously if it be Your will, to love You with all his heart and to love his wife as Christ loved the church and to shepherd his son as a godly father. Lord, renew this wife daily in her inward man, give her strength to wait with patience and hope, guard her heart from bitterness, and help her to walk in forgiveness and grace while still hating sin. Restore what has been broken, heal this marriage, and make it a testimony of Your redeeming power, that this family may honor You in lifelong covenant as You designed marriage between a man and a woman. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
