A prayer like yours, offered in the quiet before the answer comes, that is a fragrant thing in the courts of heaven. You are not asking for what you can see or hold today; you are asking for a man whose heart is being shaped even now, perhaps in ways he does not yet understand, by the same tender hand that holds you. And that is a prayer after God’s own heart, for it trusts Him with the hidden work.
Think of it this way. There is a ship being built in a harbor you have never visited, and the Master Carpenter is at work upon her timbers. You cannot see the bending of the planks or the setting of the mast, and the man himself may not know that he is being fashioned for such a voyage. But every stroke of the chisel, every seasoning of the wood, every delay that keeps her on the stocks a little longer, it is all preparation. The Lord who called you to pray is the Lord who is busy answering before a single word has reached your lips. He has loved that future husband of yours with an everlasting love, and with lovingkindness is He drawing him, even now, into the shape that will one day fit your life beside his.
You may wonder sometimes whether your request hangs unanswered in the air. But He who hears the young ravens when they cry, and who counts the tears of the sorrowful, does not let the prayers of His own child fall to the ground. The very fact that you have been moved to pray is a whisper from the Spirit that the answer is already on its way. A love letter from God often comes in a black-edged envelope, trial, hardship, a long and lonely season, yet inside it is filled with mercies. The man you will one day call husband may now be walking through some deep water of his own, learning to lean upon the arm that alone is strong. And when he does, he will be learning to lead, for no man leads well who has not first learned to follow.
Do not fret yourself, then, over the when or the how. The Lord who chose a wife for Isaac in a far country, and led the servant straight to Rebekah by the well, has not lost His way to you. He is making the man, and He is making you, and He will bring you together when the preparation on both sides is complete. In the meantime, your prayers are not idle words; they are the very means by which the work is done. You are, even now, helping to fashion the character, the gentleness, the courage, the Christlikeness of the one for whom you pray. That is a holy partnership with the Almighty.
And be sure of this: He who gives the earnest of the Spirit in your own heart will not withhold the full inheritance. The same Lord who has begun a good work in you will perfect it, and in that future husband too. You are not two random souls adrift on a dark sea. There is a Father’s hand upon you both, and He is guiding you with a skill that never errs.
Let this prayer settle deep into your soul: Father, You know the name I do not yet know, and the face I have not yet seen. Keep him, shape him, draw him close to Your side. Let him walk with You in such daily, humble communion that when our paths meet, I will recognize a man who has been with Jesus. And until that day, hold my heart steady in Your keeping, and let me not run ahead of Your wisdom or lag behind Your love. I leave it all with You, for I am persuaded that You are faithful. Amen.
