Prayer for my friend's big mouth.

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Today I lift up my friend, whose mouth makes enemys and causes strife too often to mention. I pray that his mouth will begin to learn to remain silent in times where in the past up till now he thought he could use it to break down people around him, manipulate, gaslight, or take advantage of them with it. This I pray in Jesus name. Amen

We join you in lifting up your friend before the Lord and we thank you for bringing him before the throne of grace with honesty and love. We understand the burden you carry when you see someone you care about using his mouth to cause strife, to make enemies, and to tear down others rather than build them up. The Lord cares deeply about how we use our words because our speech reveals what is in our heart.

Scripture warns us about the power of the tongue. Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles Proverbs 21:23. In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely Proverbs 10:19. Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise Proverbs 17:28. We are also taught that manipulation, gaslighting and taking advantage of others are not small faults but sins that flow from pride and selfishness and they grieve the Holy Spirit. Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear Ephesians 4:29. Death and life are in the power of the tongue Proverbs 18:21 and we will give account for every careless word we speak Matthew 12:36. The tongue is a restless evil, full of deadly poison James 3:8 and without the work of Christ and the control of the Holy Spirit no one can tame it on his own.

We also gently rebuke the pattern you described of using words to break down people, to manipulate, to gaslight and to take advantage. These are not just bad habits but sinful ways that harm others and dishonor God and they require repentance and a turning away. The Lord calls us to let our speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt Colossians 4:6 and to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger James 1:19. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 15:1.

We pray together for him now.

Father in heaven we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, for it is only through Him that we have access to Your throne and there is no other name by which we can be saved Acts 4:12. We lift up this dear friend to You and ask for Your mercy and Your transforming work in his heart. Lord forgive him for words spoken in pride, in anger and in selfishness and for every time his mouth has caused strife and wounded others. Create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him Psalm 51:10. Teach him to guard his mouth and to know when to remain silent, to listen more than he speaks and to speak only what is helpful for building others up. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that he may bear the fruit of love, kindness, gentleness and self control Galatians 5:22-23 and let his words be seasoned with grace and truth. Help him to speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15 and to use his mouth to encourage, to heal and to give grace to those who hear. We pray that You would give him a deep awareness of the weight of his words and a desire to honor You with every word he speaks. We also pray for our friend who intercedes for him, give wisdom and courage to speak the truth in love, to correct gently as one who would restore a brother Galatians 6:1, and to continue to pray without ceasing. Let this friendship be a testimony of Your redeeming power. This we ask in the mighty name of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to continue to love your friend enough to tell him the truth with grace. Pray for opportunities to gently show him what Scripture says about his speech and to hold him accountable in love. Encourage him to seek the Lord daily, to confess when he sins with his mouth and to ask the Holy Spirit to help him pause before he speaks. As he learns to remain silent where he once would have torn down and to speak life where he once caused strife, the Lord will be glorified and his relationships will be healed.

We appreciate you bringing your friend to the Lord in this way. It is a kind and faithful thing to intercede when you see someone's words creating distance and strife around him, and to ask God to work in that area instead of just talking about him to others.

We hear how much you want his speech to change from tearing down or manipulating to something quieter and more careful, especially in moments when he feels the urge to get the upper hand. That kind of pattern is often deeply ingrained, and change usually comes slowly, with both God's work in his heart and honest reflection on his part.

One simple way we can keep praying with you is to ask God to give him a pause before he speaks, and to give you wisdom about your own role as his friend. If the Lord opens a calm, private moment, a brief, caring word about how his words land on others can sometimes mean more than a correction in the moment of tension. And continuing to model steady, gracious speech yourself is a quiet witness.

Father, we lift this friend to You. Work in his heart and help him to value silence over strife and honesty over manipulation. Give him a desire to listen well and to speak in ways that honor You and respect others. Give our brother who prayed the wisdom and patience to love him well and to know when to speak and when to remain quiet. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We join you in bringing this burden before the throne of grace, and we thank you for loving your friend enough to pray for his soul rather than merely complaining of his fault.

The Scripture speaks plainly concerning the tongue and concerning strife. The tongue though little boasteth great things, and where strife and contention are allowed to reign there is confusion and every evil work. What you have described, a mouth used to break down others, to manipulate and to take advantage, is not a light infirmity but a sin which grieves the Lord and wounds the church and the world around. He that keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles, and blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.

We pray with you that God would do a work of grace in your friend's heart, for the mouth speaketh out of the abundance of the heart. We ask the Lord to grant him a deep conviction of sin, a humble and contrite spirit, and a new watchfulness over his lips. May the Lord teach him when to be silent and when to speak, that his words may no longer be as a sword to wound but as a means of grace to edify. May he learn to let no corrupt communication proceed out of his mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. May strife be put away from him and be replaced by that wisdom which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated.

We pray also for you, that you may have wisdom and courage to speak the truth in love to your friend as the Lord gives opportunity, and that you may continue in patient prayer, knowing that it is God alone who can tame the tongue and renew the heart through faith in Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is the way of salvation.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ thy Son, we ask thee to forgive and to cleanse, to bridle this tongue and to bring forth from it instead words of truth, kindness and humility. Grant repentance and newness of life, and let peace take the place of strife. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is good that you have brought your friend before God in prayer, and that you desire not his shame but his amendment.

The tongue is a great power. As I have taught, our tongue can be a hand laying hold of the feet of God when we pray, and it can also become like the tongue of Christ Himself when it speaks with gentleness and meekness. The Lord Himself, when reviled, blessed, and when insulted said, I have not a devil, and, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil. He wills us to speak words that heal and correct, not words that break down. For he who brings out the precious from the vile shall be as His mouth.

You pray rightly that your friend would learn silence where he has been accustomed to speak to manipulate or to take advantage of others. Scripture warns us that strife and rage and a contentious tongue bring storms upon a soul and upon all around him, and that where there is much speaking, sin is not lacking. To learn to remain silent is not weakness, but wisdom and strength, for it shows that the understanding is fruitful and not empty. We should ask God not only for a restrained tongue, but for an understanding heart that knows when to speak and what to speak for the good of others.

Continue to pray for him, and do so with mercy. Do not parade his faults before others, but cover them in love and bring them to God in secret, confessing your own need for grace as well. Pray that God would give him a new heart, that his words would become useful to all, full of grace, seasoned with salt, speaking only what builds up and gives grace to those who hear.

Let us pray together. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, I ask You to have mercy on this friend. Forgive his sins of speech where he has caused strife and wounded others. Teach him to be slow to speak and quick to listen, to bridle his tongue and to speak words of truth in love. Grant him a spirit of gentleness and self control, that his mouth may no longer be an instrument of harm but an instrument of Your grace for the amendment and encouragement of his neighbors. Work in him a clean heart and renew his mind, that his understanding may be fruitful and his speech may imitate Christ. Amen.

Your prayer shows a clear understanding of how much damage words can do, and how much grace is needed to change that pattern.

Scripture teaches that the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great power. Like a small spark that can set a large forest on fire, an uncontrolled tongue can defile relationships, stir up strife, and set the whole course of a life in the wrong direction. No person can tame it by willpower alone. It is unruly and needs the help of God to be brought under control.

The Bible also shows that what comes out of the mouth reveals what is inside the heart. It is inconsistent to use the same tongue to bless God and then to curse or tear down people who are made in the likeness of God. The tongue was given for a higher purpose, to praise God and to bring life to others. Proverbs says the power of life and death is in the tongue, and that a wholesome tongue is like a tree of life. It can heal, comfort, give hope, and strengthen. Or it can pour out foolishness, wound deeply, and work ruin through lying and flattery.

You described manipulation, gaslighting, and taking advantage of others. Those uses of speech come from a heart that needs wisdom from above. True wisdom does not lead to bitter envy and strife. The wisdom that comes from God is peaceable and leads to peace. A wrathful and contentious person kindles strife the way wood feeds fire, while a person who is slow to anger quiets strife. Where talebearing and deceit stop, strife begins to die out. The words of a talebearer go down deep and cause lasting wounds.

So we can pray not only that your friend would learn silence, but that God would transform his heart so that his speech is transformed. Silence in moments of temptation is wise, and Scripture commends restraint. But even more, we pray that when he does speak, his words would be truthful, wholesome, and edifying, words that build up rather than break down.

Let us pray together.

Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this friend before You. You see how his words have created enemies and caused strife. We ask that You would do what no man can do on his own and tame his tongue. Change his heart, and let that change be heard in his speech. Teach him to be slow to speak and slow to anger, to turn away from deceit, flattery, and manipulation, and to love truth. Forgive him for the hurt his words have caused, and give him a new desire to use his mouth to bless You and to bring healing, encouragement, and comfort to others. Give him wisdom from above that makes peace. And give the one who prayed this prayer grace to speak truth in love, to not repay hurt with hurt, and to be an example of a tongue that gives life. Amen.
