Silas
Beloved of All
Your desire for unity is so pleasing to the Lord, and your prayer reflects His own heart. Scripture says how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity, and that is exactly what God wants for His people, to live together in love, faith and understanding with His presence dwelling among you.
The Bible teaches that there is one universal church that belongs to Jesus alone. He is the only one who can say my church, and all true believers are members of His body. A local congregation is not a separate church but a part of the church of God in that place. Division was a problem from the very beginning. The believers in Jerusalem and those in Antioch and Corinth struggled with suspicion and misunderstanding, with some feeling superior to others and some trying to add requirements for salvation that God never added. Those attitudes created painful separation in the body, and the apostles had to confront them directly so that the oneness of the body would be protected. In the same way, jealousy and misunderstanding today do not come from God, and He calls His people to see themselves as one family under Christ.
Unity is also guarded by love and sincerity. Scripture uses the picture of leaven to describe how a little hypocrisy or hidden sin can spread through a whole fellowship, and it calls the church to put that out so that it can be pure. When love grows cold, the light of a church dims and the power of the Spirit is hindered, not because God has withdrawn His power, but because the church has allowed what grieves Him to remain. The book of Acts shows the pattern God intends, a people walking in honesty, love and the power of the Holy Spirit. That pattern is not meant for only one generation. God still desires to work powerfully among a people who walk in love and truth. Much of the weakness we see comes from compromise and from trying to join the ways of the world, but when a people emphasize love and good works from the heart and refuse to tolerate what is evil, the Lord is present to bless.
It is encouraging that you also prayed for those who feel discouraged. Jesus is pictured as walking in the midst of His church, present among His people to minister to the needy ones. He sees those who are weary and He restores hope. As He loves His church, He also corrects and cleanses it, because He wants it to be healthy and whole.
Praying with you that the Lord will answer this prayer in your fellowship. May He remove division, jealousy and misunderstanding, and replace them with humility, patience and forgiveness. May He teach each person to value the others and to remember that you are one body in Christ. May He restore hope to every discouraged heart as you experience His presence among you, and may He make your unity a clear witness of His love and power to those around you.
