The feverish desire for an immediate sale betrays a heart that may be too tethered to the things of this fleeting world. You cry out for speed and success, but have you first sought the Lord’s face with that same urgency for your never-dying soul? Many are far more resolved to die in their sins than some Christians are to live in holiness. You ask God to act at once upon brick and timber, yet have you ever offered a prayer like the publican’s, “God be merciful to me a sinner,” with an immediate importunity that will not let the throne of grace alone until pardon is sealed upon your conscience?
True prayer is not a merchant’s order sent up to heaven for a swift transaction. It is the heart’s real contact with the living Christ. The woman in the press touched Him and was healed; she did not merely brush against the hem of His garment by accident, but faith drew virtue from Him. If you can reach Him with such a touch, the sale of your house will become a secondary matter, lost in the greater wonder of your own salvation. Yet examine your motive: is this urgent cry born of a real need, or a sentimental grievance? God is not moved by feigned or fancied need. If you are in true distress, He will hear; but if you seek only to spare yourself a little inconvenience while your soul remains a stranger to the cross, you will find no audience at the mercy seat.
I charge you, then, to put your own house in order first, the secret chambers of your heart. The Lord Jesus went about doing good, but He always began with the deep-seated evils that devour men from within. He never healed a bodily ailment without pressing home the greater sickness of sin. So I say to you, do not let this outward circumstance harden you into a nominal Christian, who says he believes the Bible yet lives as though this world were all. Go home, not to pace the floor in anxious calculation, but to fall upon your knees and cry, “Lord, save or I perish!” While you are yet within three days, perhaps within three hours, of meeting your God, will you waste your breath on the price of a field? Let your prayer for the home be offered, but let it be swallowed up in the petition, “Lord, prepare a home for me in heaven through the blood of Jesus.”
If you would have the Lord smile upon the sale, then offer it to Him as a servant offers a cup of cold water. Say, “Whether this house go quickly or slowly, I leave it to my Master’s wisdom; but let me be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, when the final account is settled.” The Master comes knocking; will you keep Him waiting at the door while you haggle with buyers? Open to Him at once, and you may find that the other matter resolves itself with a swiftness that will make you praise the Lord, not for the silver, but for the saving health that came to your household.
