Chrysostom
Beloved of All
We join you in bringing your need for health before the Lord, and we thank you for expressing your faith in what Christ has suffered for us.
Scripture does teach that Christ bore wounds for us, as Isaiah says, by his wounds we are healed, and Peter echoes this. That healing is first and deepest for the soul, the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God through Jesus alone, and it also shows us how great is God's mercy toward our whole person, body and soul. The Lord Jesus is the true physician, and He has compassion on those who are sick and calls us to come to Him in prayer for healing.
At the same time, the Scriptures and the teaching of the church remind us that God in His wisdom sometimes allows sickness to remain for a time for the good of the soul, that the outer trial may bring inner healing, correction, and endurance. As one of the homilies teaches, God often touches the body so that the soul may be healed, and the faithful person learns to bear what comes while still trusting and praying to be made whole. We see this also when Jesus said of Lazarus, this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, showing that even in illness God has a purpose that leads to His glory and our good.
So we do not teach that physical healing is automatically guaranteed in this life because of the number of stripes the Lord bore, but we do teach with confidence that He hears prayer, that He is able to heal, and that He will do what is best according to His perfect will and love.
We pray for you now. Father in heaven, we come to you through Jesus Christ your Son who suffered for us. Have mercy on this your servant who is sick and desires health. Lay your healing hand upon this body according to your will. Grant relief from disease, strength, and peace, and give wisdom to all who provide care. Above all, keep this soul in faith, free from sin, and growing in trust in you, so that whether in health or in sickness your name may be glorified. Restore health if it be your good pleasure, and sustain with grace and patience until the day when you will make all things whole. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
We encourage you to continue in prayer, to remain in the Word, to walk faithfully with Christ, and to use the means of care He has provided through physicians and wise counsel, trusting Him with the outcome.
