Prayer for forgiveness

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I regret the way I treated some people and really want to tell them I am sorry part of me feels embarrassed to even say the words, but God is telling me to do so while they are alive. It is so hard for me to open up but i know life is short and I will regret not doing so if they pass. I am asking for strength to please ask God for forgiveness for the horrible things I said to my loved ones. I am praying for strength to utter the words I'm sorry even if I am not strong enough I have said sorry behind closed doors but I need to say it to them for myself to heal. I am asking God for forgiveness for any terrible words I have said to those I love and pray they can truley forgive me for doing so.

Amazing Grace
God’s grace sees your worst sin and still chooses to heal and restore you completely.
The Heart Full and the Mouth Closed
God’s grace silences all boasting by covering sin completely and humbling the heart before Him.
For Christ’s Sake
God’s mercy comes only through Christ, so turn from your own worth and plead His name for forgiveness and life.
We join with you in this burden and we thank you for your honesty and humility in bringing this before the Lord. We hear the conviction of the Holy Spirit in your words, that still small voice urging you to make things right while there is still time, and we agree that this is from God. Life is indeed short and uncertain, as James 4:14 reminds us that our life is a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away, so the desire to obey now rather than live with regret is wise and godly. We understand the embarrassment and the struggle to open up, for pride often makes the simple words I am sorry feel so heavy, but God honors a broken and contrite heart.

The Scripture calls us to more than feeling sorry in private. Proverbs 28:13 says He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. 1 John 1:9 promises If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. And James 5:16 instructs us to Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Saying sorry behind closed doors is not the same as humbling yourself before those you have hurt. Jesus himself taught in Matthew 5:23-24 that if we remember a brother has something against us, we should go and be reconciled first. The Lord will give you strength to do what feels impossible in your own strength, for Isaiah 41:10 says Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. And Philippians 4:13 assures us we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us. Your words have power, and Ephesians 4:29 calls us to Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear, so going to your loved ones to speak words of grace and repentance will bring healing to them and to you.

We also want to lovingly point out that you have asked God for forgiveness but you have not mentioned the name of Jesus Christ in your request. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved and forgiven. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To be forgiven we must confess our sins to God through faith in Jesus, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, and trusting Him alone as Lord and Savior. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness, and then come boldly to the throne of grace in His name.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who is burdened with regret for hurtful words spoken to loved ones. Lord, we thank You for the godly sorrow that leads to repentance and for the conviction You have placed on this heart. We ask You to forgive every careless and terrible word spoken, to cleanse and restore through the blood of Jesus. Grant strength and courage where there is embarrassment and fear, replace pride with humility, and give the words to say I am sorry face to face. Help our loved one to obey Your prompting quickly while there is still time. We pray that as they humble themselves, You would prepare the hearts of those loved ones to receive the apology with grace and to offer true forgiveness. Even if forgiveness from others is delayed, let there be peace in obeying You. Heal the relationships that have been wounded and heal the heart that longs to be made right. Let this act of obedience bring freedom and no longer regret. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to not delay, to pray and ask the Lord for the right time and place, and then go in humility and simplicity. You do not need perfect words, just honest ones, taking responsibility without excuse and asking for forgiveness. Whether they respond with immediate forgiveness or need time, you will have been obedient to God and you will find the healing you are seeking. The Lord will be with you as you speak.

We hear how much this has been weighing on you, and how sincerely you want to make things right while you still can. Feeling embarrassed to say the words out loud is so understandable, especially when you know the words you said hurt people you love. Wanting to move from saying sorry in private to saying it face to face takes real humility, and we admire that God is stirring this in you.

What you described makes sense, that quiet apology to God matters, and so does the harder step of speaking directly to the person. Both are part of healing, but they feel very different. The embarrassment doesn't mean you are not ready, it often just means you care deeply about doing this well.

When you feel ready, it can help to keep it simple and focused. You might choose one person to start with, the one most on your heart, and write down in two or three plain sentences what you want to own and that you are sorry, without adding explanations or expecting a certain response. Then ask the Lord to show you a calm, private moment to share it. If speaking feels too overwhelming at first, a brief handwritten note in your own words can also be a sincere way to begin.

Father, we bring our friend to You and thank You for the soft heart You have given them. Please forgive the hurtful words spoken and wash them in Your mercy through Jesus. Give them courage and clear words when the time comes to say I'm sorry, and prepare the hearts of those they love to hear it. Bring healing in Your timing and help them walk in Your peace. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is forgiveness with God, and the very desire you feel to seek it is itself a token of His gracious working in your heart. You have done well to bring this burden into the light, for to feel the weight of words hastily or harshly spoken, and to be ashamed to utter the simple words I am sorry, is a common experience of a tender conscience awakened by the Spirit.

Hear what the Lord Himself declares, I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. This is a divine forgiveness, not the poor pardon of man, but the act of God Himself. Were all men to hiss at you and never forgive, yet if God forgives you for Christ's sake, you may enter heaven. And if you have been the chief of sinners in speech and temper toward those you love, there is forgiveness for the chief of sinners, and God can bestow it now. It is a complete forgiveness. When you come to your great Creditor and say I have nothing to pay with, He does not forgive a part and leave a part upon the book, He gives a full release, an oblivion to all your debt.

Would He teach you to ask for forgiveness if forgiveness were an impossibility. Does God mock men. Does He bring you down upon your knees that He may see you mourn and laugh at your despair. No, He sends this message to you as you are, There is forgiveness. There is forgiveness tonight, where you sit, just as you are. That forgiveness is only to be obtained from God, through Jesus Christ His Son. Look to Calvary and see His wounds, and know that there the price was paid that your terrible words might be pardoned. Believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself, as you believe the creed, and sue for it unfeignedly. Christ was exalted to be a Prince and a Saviour to give repentance and forgiveness of sins, and He has not lost His authorization to forgive.

You also feel rightly that you should go to those you have wounded and speak plainly to them while they are yet alive. To have said sorry behind closed doors is not the same as to seek reconciliation face to face. Our Lord has taught us to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to count it joy to pass by a brother's fault. How much more should we who have received so much manifest forgiveness find it natural to open our hands and confess our fault. It is tender and right that you should desire their forgiveness, though your acceptance with God does not finally hang upon whether men forgive you. Go, then, in meekness, not trusting in your own strength of utterance, but in Him.

For this you have asked for strength, and strength is what He promises to give. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. What He promises to give, it is our duty to seek. Your strength for this hard duty will not come from polishing your own resolve, but from waiting upon the Lord, from prayer which lays hold upon the Invisible, and from a fresh dedication of yourself to Him who bought you. He is able to strengthen you, He is willing to strengthen you, and He will effectually do it in answer to prayer. He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might He increaseth strength. In that strength you shall be able to speak the words your heart now finds so hard, and to do it in love and truth.

May the Lord grant you even now a humble boldness. Confess your sin first to God through the blood of Christ, and receive His full pardon by faith. Then go, as He gives you opportunity, to each one you have grieved, and say plainly and meekly that you have sinned in what you said and you ask their forgiveness. Leave the result with the Lord, who can make the errand joyful on both sides. Whether they at once forgive or require time, you will have done what love and obedience require, and your conscience shall be quieted before God.

I pray for you, that the God whose name is holiness and whose essence is love would assure you of forgiveness in Christ, renew your strength as you wait upon Him, and give you a mouth to speak that healing word, I am sorry, for His glory and for the peace of those you love.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty and desire to make things right is evidence of God working in your heart, and it is right to listen to that prompting while there is still time. Life is short, and the longing you feel to speak directly to those you have hurt, even though embarrassment makes it difficult, is a good and necessary step toward healing.

Scripture teaches that forgiveness is found through Jesus Christ alone. When we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us. That forgiveness then trains us to have a gentle and humble heart toward others. You have already begun to confess to God behind closed doors, and God hears that prayer. The next step He is calling you to is also biblical, to go to those you have wounded and seek reconciliation in person, as Jesus said to first be reconciled to your brother or sister.

What you are seeking takes real courage. True courage is not harsh or loud words spoken from pride, but speaking the truth with humility and love. The meekness and gentleness of Christ is the model for this. An apology offered in that spirit does not demand a certain response, it simply owns what was said, speaks clearly and without excuse, and asks for forgiveness. That kind of humble boldness honors God and gives the other person room to respond freely.

It is understandable to feel embarrassed and to find it hard to open up. Ask God specifically for strength not only to feel sorry, but to speak the words out loud. You can pray for the right time, for a calm and private setting, and for words that are simple and sincere. Something like, I was wrong to say those terrible things to you, I am truly sorry, will you forgive me, is enough. You cannot control how they will respond, but you can be faithful to obey, and you can trust God with the outcome and with your own healing whether forgiveness is offered quickly or takes time.

We will pray for you.

Father, thank You for Your mercy through Jesus Christ and for the work You have begun in this heart. Forgive the hurtful words that were spoken to loved ones, and cleanse and restore through the blood of Christ. Grant strength and courage to speak openly and humbly, with meekness and gentleness, and to say I am sorry without fear or pride. Prepare the hearts of those who will hear these words, and grant grace for forgiveness and healing where there has been pain. Give peace to trust You with the results and to walk in obedience while there is time. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
