Prayer for forgiveness for those who hate me

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I ask that those who have targeted me to have happy, prosperous, and beautiful lives. I ask that my heart always sees through with love. Although I am tired and sick, I still see that they don’t know what they do and ask for forgiveness through God.

We hear your heart, and it is heavy with the weight of hurt, yet still tender with the love of Christ. Your desire to forgive those who have targeted you is a powerful reflection of the grace that has been poured out for you. Jesus Himself, while hanging on the cross, prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34). In this, we see the perfect example of love, even in suffering, even when it is undeserved. You are walking in the footsteps of your Savior, and that is no small thing.

Yet we must also speak truth in love. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring the harm that has been done or pretending it did not wound you. It does not mean trusting those who have proven untrustworthy or allowing yourself to remain in a place of continued abuse. The Bible tells us, "If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.'" (Romans 12:18-19). Forgiveness is releasing the debt to God, not excusing the sin. It is trusting Him to be just while you choose to walk in love.

We also notice that your prayer does not mention the name of Jesus, and we must address this. There is no forgiveness, no love, no peace apart from Him. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6). It is only through His sacrifice on the cross that we are reconciled to God, and it is only by His power that we can forgive as He has forgiven us. If you have not surrendered your life to Christ, we urge you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in His resurrection, and receive the gift of salvation. Without Him, forgiveness is impossible, both receiving it and giving it.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that ache for our brother/sister who has been wounded by the hatred of others. Lord, You see the pain, the exhaustion, the sickness that weighs upon them, and we ask that You would be their strength. Give them the grace to forgive as You have forgiven them, not because their offenders deserve it, but because You have called them to walk in love. Heal their heart, Lord, and fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding.

Father, we pray for those who have targeted them. You tell us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). So we ask that You would soften their hearts, open their eyes to the truth of their actions, and draw them to repentance. Do not let them remain in darkness, but bring them into the light of Your love. If it is Your will, bless them with happiness, prosperity, and beauty, not as a reward for their sin, but as a testimony of Your mercy and grace.

Lord, we also pray for wisdom and discernment. Help them to know when to set boundaries, when to walk away, and when to extend grace. Protect them from bitterness, for we know that a root of bitterness defiles many (Hebrews 12:15). Instead, fill them with Your love, which covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8).

Above all, we pray that they would cling to You, Jesus. Be their refuge, their healer, their defender. Remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). May they find their identity and worth in You alone, and may Your love be the lens through which they see others.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who forgave us while we were still sinners. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these scriptures as you continue to walk in forgiveness:
- "Bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do." (Colossians 3:13)
- "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32)
- "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

You are not alone in this. The Lord sees your struggle, and He will sustain you. Keep your eyes on Him, and let His love be the foundation of your heart.

Oh, sister in Christ, we’re praying for you right now, our hearts ache with you as you carry this heavy burden of love for those who’ve hurt you. It’s so clear how deeply you’re walking in the truth of Jesus’ words, even when it feels impossible. You’re not just praying for their well-being; you’re praying for their hearts to see the light of grace, just like you’ve seen it in your own life.

We’re asking God to tenderize your own heart as you go. It’s okay to feel tired, to feel sick, those are real, and He sees them. But He’s also asking you to lean into Him in those moments, to let His strength carry you when your own is fading. Maybe right now, He’s whispering to you: "I’ve got you. Let Me love through you."

We’re praying that God would give you fresh strength to see those who’ve targeted you, not as enemies, but as souls He’s still drawing closer to Himself. And we’re asking for wisdom to know when to extend grace and when to walk away, because sometimes love looks like setting boundaries to protect your peace.

Most of all, we’re praying that you’d feel His presence like a warm embrace, wrapping around your exhaustion, your sickness, your heart. You’re not alone in this. Jesus carried His cross with you in mind, and He’s carrying yours with you. Let’s hold onto that truth together. In Jesus’ name, we’re praying for you.
