Prayer for discernment

For the past weeks, I have been praying the Lord to create opportunities for me to get to know a brother in Christ I am interested in at my church more. Today I found him on a Christian dating app, which confirms he is single and open to dating. I am not sure if I should like his profile to signal interest and potentially match or not. I am praying in Jesus name for guidance and clarity from Him on what to do, and whether He wants me ending up married to this man or not. If the Lord sees this as good, I am praying we match on the app and it starts a meaningful and deep conversation between us. In Jesus name I ask. Amen.

We hear your heart’s desire to seek the Lord’s will in this matter, and we join you in prayer, asking for wisdom and discernment as you navigate this situation. First, we want to affirm your commitment to praying in Jesus’ name—this is essential, for Scripture tells us, *"Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it"* (John 14:13-14). It is only through Christ that we have access to the Father, and we must always approach Him in His name, for there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12).

Your desire to honor God in pursuing a godly marriage is commendable. The Bible makes it clear that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, designed by God for companionship, mutual support, and the raising of godly offspring (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:22-33). It is good and right to seek a spouse who shares your faith and commitment to Christ, for *"Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"* (2 Corinthians 6:14). We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord’s guidance as you discern whether this brother in Christ is the one He has prepared for you.

However, we must also address the use of a dating app in this context. While it is not inherently sinful to use such platforms, we must be cautious about the potential pitfalls they present. The world’s approach to dating often prioritizes superficial connections, physical attraction, and emotional impulsivity over the biblical principles of patience, purity, and godly wisdom. Scripture warns us, *"Do not love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him"* (1 John 2:15). We must ask ourselves: Is this the most honoring way to pursue a relationship that is meant to reflect Christ’s love for the Church?

Instead of relying on an app to signal interest, consider whether there are more organic, God-honoring ways to get to know this brother. Are there opportunities within your church community—small groups, service projects, or fellowship events—where you can observe his character, faith, and walk with the Lord? Proverbs 19:2 reminds us, *"It isn’t good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way."* Take time to pray and seek counsel from mature believers in your church who know you both well. Their wisdom can help you discern whether this is a relationship the Lord is blessing.

We also want to gently rebuke the assumption that a "match" on a dating app is confirmation of God’s will. The Lord’s guidance often comes through His Word, prayer, godly counsel, and the peace of the Holy Spirit—not through the algorithms of a digital platform. *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight"* (Proverbs 3:5-6). Be cautious of putting your hope in a man-made system rather than in the Lord’s sovereign plan.

Let us pray together for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this sister and her desire to walk in Your will. Lord, we ask that You grant her discernment and wisdom as she seeks to honor You in this situation. Father, if this brother is the one You have prepared for her, we pray that You would open doors for them to connect in a way that glorifies You. Remove any obstacles that are not of You, and give her clarity and peace as she waits on Your timing.

Lord, we also ask that You guard her heart from impulsivity or worldly influences. Help her to seek You first in all things, trusting that You know what is best for her. If this relationship is not Your will, we pray that You would close the door gently and redirect her steps toward the path You have for her. Give her the strength to wait on You, knowing that Your plans are always good.

Father, we rebuke any spirit of anxiety or impatience that may be trying to influence her decisions. We declare that she will not lean on her own understanding but will trust in You with all her heart. Surround her with godly counsel and fill her with Your peace as she seeks Your face.

We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, Amen.

In closing, we encourage you to continue seeking the Lord with a humble and patient heart. Remember that *"the Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him"* (Lamentations 3:25). Trust that He will guide your steps if you are willing to wait on His timing and follow His ways. If this brother is the one God has for you, He will make it clear in His perfect way and time. Until then, focus on growing in your relationship with Christ and serving Him wholeheartedly. Your future spouse will be drawn to the godly woman you are becoming.

We understand your situation and we're here to support you in prayer. It's encouraging to see your desire to honor God in this matter, seeking His will above all else. We join you in praying for discernment and wisdom as you navigate this situation.

We want to echo the importance of praying in Jesus' name, as it is through Him that we have access to the Father. We also appreciate your commitment to finding a godly marriage partner, as marriage is indeed a sacred covenant designed by God for our good and His glory.

However, we want to gently encourage you to consider a more organic way of getting to know this brother in Christ, rather than relying on a dating app. While it's not inherently wrong to use such platforms, they often prioritize superficial connections over biblical principles like patience, purity, and godly wisdom. Instead, consider opportunities within your church community to observe his character and faith, and to grow in your own walk with the Lord.

Remember, a "match" on a dating app is not a confirmation of God's will. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).
