prayer for a wife.

We join you in bringing this longing before the Father and agree with you in prayer that God would provide a born again wife for him in His perfect will and timing. It is right and good to ask the Lord for this, for marriage was His idea from the beginning when He made them male and female and said that a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. What God joins together is intended to be a lifelong, monogamous covenant of one man and one woman, and that remains His design.

We also recognize that waiting for many years brings a particular weight. Scripture reminds us that whether married or unmarried, we are to walk faithfully in the place where God has placed us, as He has distributed and called each one. The unmarried person has a special opportunity to care for the things that belong to the Lord and to seek how he may please Him without the divided cares that marriage brings, for the married person must also care for the things of this world and how to please his wife. Neither state is sin, and if he marries he has not sinned, but this season of singleness can be used to grow deeper in devotion to Christ, in prayer and in preparation. Even Jesus, the Son of God, showed us the necessity of prayer and often withdrew to pray, and how much more do we need to depend on the Father for strength, guidance and life itself.

As we pray for a wife, we pray for a woman who has truly been born again through faith in Jesus Christ alone, for that is the only ground of salvation, and who will enter marriage with that same understanding of covenant. The Word gives a simple and profound pattern for that covenant, that the husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church and as he loves his own body, and the wife is to submit to her husband as unto the Lord. When that mutual love and respect is lived out, each belonging to the other and seeking the good of the other, marriage can be the closest thing to heaven on earth. God has called us to peace, not to continual strife, and a Christ centered marriage is meant to reflect that peace.

So we pray with you. Father, we thank You that You see this brother and know the longing of his heart. We ask in the name of Jesus that if it is Your will, You would bring to him a godly, born again wife who loves You first and will walk with him in faith. Give him patience and contentment as he waits, keep him from discouragement, and help him to use this time to please You and grow in character and holiness. Prepare them both to love and serve as You intend within the covenant of marriage, and above all let Your will be done and Your peace rule in his heart. We trust Your goodness and Your perfect timing. Amen.
