Prayer for a Good and Stable Job

Your anxiety for your household and responsibilities is not misplaced, but let it not master you. For what lasting injury can any person do to you, if you are willing to rest in God? Even the devil himself, that wickedest of all, becomes an occasion for a crown, as with Job. So why fear a man as an enemy?

The Good Shepherd leads his sheep into pasture where none can thrust them out, a pasture of safety and security, not of earthly wages but of his own nurturing Lordship. That is the true refuge. Seek therefore not merely a change of employment, but the riches that are stable and enduring, the fruit of good works, which no personal differences can touch. For God bestows all things richly: air, light, water, daily bread.

Make provision for the body, yes, as for health and necessity, a little wine for the stomach’s sake, but not to kindle wanton anxieties. The present life is a dream; its honors and fears vanish with the day. The saints of old looked not to contracts written in ink, but to the virtue of a soul, and found security there. If you desire honor and safety, know that poverty of spirit holds a calmer harbor: no flattery of rulers, no terror of false accusers, no envy to stalk your steps.

There is a wrestling ground where you learn self-command, an imitation of the angelic life. So labor diligently, commit your cause to God, and let no strife embitter you. But above all, spend your chief industry on the soul; for that is an employment no circumstance can wrest from you, and in it is a peace that surpasses all human stability.

Your job is on the line and you carry the weight of providing for your family. That pressure is real, and it is not wrong to cry out for help when things feel unstable. In Scripture we meet a man who lost everything, his livelihood, his children, his health, and he had no explanation for it. He was not a man who had turned from God. The opposite was true: the Lord Himself called him upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. Yet suffering fell on him anyway. His friends insisted he must have done something to deserve it. They were sure that if he would just get right with God, everything would go well again. But they were wrong. His story reminds us that not every trial is a punishment for sin.

That man’s suffering had a purpose he could not see, and it was not the consequence of his own wickedness. In the same way, the personal differences threatening your job may have nothing to do with some hidden sin you need to confess. Sometimes conflict arises even when we pursue integrity. I don’t know every detail of your situation, but I do know that God is not surprised by it. He sees the strain you are under. And like that ancient sufferer, you may be wondering why this is happening and where to turn.

The man’s friends gave him religious advice: “Acquaint yourself with God and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.” That is true in a sense, but they meant it as a formula, fix your life, say the right things, and prosperity returns. He protested his innocence, yet his friends kept accusing him of hypocrisy. He grew so weary that he cried out for a mediator, someone who could stand between God and man and lay a hand on both. That longing points straight to Jesus, the true mediator who represents us before the Father. He is the one who hears the cries of those who labor and are heavy laden.

When everything around you feels uncertain, your foundation must be deeper than your job. I will pray with you that the Lord opens a door to a good and stable position, a place where your responsibilities can be met and your family provided for. But I also pray that in the waiting you would know the peace that passes understanding, and that you would hold fast to faithfulness even when you cannot trace what God is doing. The story did not end in the ash heap. The Lord spoke, revealed His power, and restored what was lost. He remains the same today. Lay His words in your heart, entrust your way to Him, and let Him worry about those who oppose you. He is able to lift you up in due time.
