Chrysostom
Beloved of All
What is this petition? You ask prayer for a brother troubled with clots in his blood, yet the very mention of blood should turn our minds from the body to the soul. You see the red stream in the veins and fear its stopping, but do you not see the far more fearful clot that sin forms in the soul? We shudder at a broken vessel in the flesh, and rightfully so, for the body is a gift. Yet how much more should we shudder at the hardening of the heart, that spiritual coagulation that blocks the flow of mercy and prayer!
For consider: without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. This is the constant teaching. The blood of sheep and calves under the Law could never truly purge the conscience, but they were a shadow of that precious Blood which alone can dissolve every stain. When you ask for prayer for his body, you are calling upon that very Blood, whether you realize it or not. For what else makes a prayer effectual but the propitiation set forth by God? So do not fix your eyes solely upon the natural blood that may be threatening his life, but fix them upon the Divine Blood that is able to grant eternal life. Unless he eats the Flesh and drinks the Blood of the Son of Man, there is no life in him. The one blood speaks of mortality; the other Blood speaks of resurrection and immortality.
But I must ask you both, you who make the request and he for whom it is made: in what state is your soul as you draw near to ask? For see how you seek the help of others, yet does your brother himself watch and pray? It is a good thing to enjoy the prayer of the Saints, but only when we ourselves are on the alert. If we sleep, the prayers of a thousand righteous men will profit us nothing. Do not say, "What need have I of prayer, for I have asked the Church?" This is pride and a deep sleep. Yea, though he become as Paul, he has need of his own fervent prayer. On this account he needs it most, because he thinks perhaps that the prayers of others are sufficient. Do not exalt yourself in supposed safety, lest you be humbled. Faith and prayer remove mountains, but a mountain of unbelief blocks the healing of both soul and body.
And beware, above all, of the clot of unforgiveness. For what is more like a stopped vessel than a heart that refuses to let the flow of mercy pass through? You propitiate God with prayer, and then what? Do you utter imprecations? Do you hold a silent grudge that has made the blood of your spirit bitter and stagnant? For if you forgive not, you will not be forgiven. Hear this, O man: if the unforgiving is not forgiven, what shall become of the man who prays while cherishing enmity? Your own prayer, rather than being a healing balm, becomes an accusation against yourself. Does he have a brother against whom he has aught? Let him go first and be reconciled. The mouth that touches the Lord's Body, the tongue that will be reddened with that life-giving Blood, must not utter anything offensive. How can the Blood that was shed for enemies be invoked by a heart that curses a friend? Let every prayer be accompanied with thanksgiving, and let all bitterness be purged out, lest the very prayer for the healing of his blood becomes a petition against his own soul. For the greater danger is not the infirmity of the flesh, but the soul that appears before the Physician full of the poison of hatred, which no physical remedy can cure.
