We hear your heartfelt concern for your parents and their struggle with what has become a modern-day snare, social media addiction. This is not merely a harmless habit but a distraction that can steal precious time, dull the mind, and even hinder fellowship with God and family. The Bible warns us in 1 Corinthians 6:12, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything." Even things that seem harmless can become idols when they consume our attention and affection more than the Lord.
We must also consider the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If your parents are spending countless hours scrolling through social media, we must ask: where is their treasure? Is it in the fleeting approval of likes and comments, or is it in the eternal treasures of God’s Word, prayer, and meaningful relationships? Proverbs 23:4-5 also cautions, "Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky." Social media can feel like a pursuit of connection or validation, but it often leaves the soul empty and the heart restless.
Let us come before the Lord together in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we lift up these parents to You, asking for Your divine intervention in their lives. Lord, we confess that social media has become a stumbling block for them, consuming time and energy that could be spent in far more fruitful ways. We ask that You break the hold this addiction has on their hearts and minds. Open their eyes to see the emptiness of endless scrolling and the beauty of the life You have called them to live. Father, fill their days with purpose, whether through prayer, service, time in Your Word, or quality moments with loved ones. Replace their desire for mindless media with a hunger for You and the things that truly matter. Help them to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, knowing that all these things will be added to them. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, who alone can set the captives free. Amen.
We encourage you, as their child, to gently and lovingly speak truth into their lives. Share your concerns with them, not in judgment, but in love, reminding them of the fleeting nature of this world and the eternal value of investing in things that last. Suggest alternative activities that could fill their time, such as serving in their church, volunteering in their community, or even starting a new hobby that brings them joy and fulfillment. Pray with them and for them, asking the Holy Spirit to convict their hearts and draw them closer to God.
Remember, too, that your parents are not alone in this struggle. Many in this generation face the same temptation, and it is only through the power of Christ that true freedom can be found. Galatians 5:1 reminds us, "Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage." Let us all examine our own hearts and ask the Lord to reveal any areas where we, too, may be entangled in the snares of this world. May we all seek to live lives that honor God, using our time wisely and for His glory.
