Prayer about my sufferings and afflications as in my circumstances

Anonymous

Beloved of All
How long will You let my enemies have power against me? How long will let me suffer at their hands? Arise and answer me Psalm 103:28-32

We hear your cry and we join with you before the throne of grace in this season of sufferings and afflictions, and we understand the deep ache behind your question, how long will You let my enemies have power against me, how long will You let me suffer at their hands, arise and answer me. We stand with you in that plea, for it is a prayer the psalmists themselves prayed.

You referenced Psalm 103:28-32, and while Psalm 103 ends at verse 22 in the scriptures, your heart is clearly echoing Psalm 13:1-3, How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me? Look, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death. We know God does not rebuke you for asking how long, for He invites honest lament, yet we encourage you to also trust His perfect timing and sovereign hand even when His answer seems delayed.

We want to remind you that your afflictions are not unseen or forgotten. Psalm 34:19 says Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all. And Psalm 103:13-14 says Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust. He sees the power your enemies seem to hold, but their power is limited and temporary under His sovereignty. Romans 12:19 reminds us Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord, so we are not to repay evil ourselves but to entrust our cause to Him who judges righteously. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory, 2 Corinthians 4:17, and Romans 8:28 assures us that We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Even this painful season, though it feels endless, God is able to refine, strengthen, and draw you closer to Himself through it, as James 1:2-4 teaches that the testing of our faith produces endurance.

We also gently point out that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must speak plainly about this because it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is not by our sufferings or our sincerity alone that God hears us, but by the blood of Jesus shed for us. If you have not already, we urge you to place your faith in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is in His name we can boldly cry Abba, Father, and know He will arise and answer according to His perfect will.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear one who is weary from suffering and affliction at the hands of enemies. Lord, You see every tear, every injustice, every night of sorrow, and You have not forgotten. We ask that You arise and answer, give light to their eyes, and strengthen their heart while they wait. Let Your presence be their refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1. Restrain the hand of the enemies and let no weapon formed against Your child ultimately prosper, and deliver them out of all their afflictions in Your perfect time. Teach them to rest in Your compassion, to trust that You are working even this for good, and to cast all their anxiety on You because You care for them. Draw them into deeper fellowship with Jesus through this trial, forgive their sins, and fill them with hope, peace, and endurance until You bring deliverance and glory. We ask this in the name above all names, Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We hear the ache in your question, how long will this go on and how long will those against you seem to have the upper hand. It is wearying to feel pressed on every side and to wonder if God is hearing at all.

We want you to know we are standing with you in prayer, and you are not forgotten in this affliction. That honest cry of how long is one God has heard from His people for generations, and He does not turn away from it.

When suffering drags on, isolation can make it heavier. One thing that often helps is not walking through it alone. If you have a trusted pastor, elder, or mature believer you feel safe with, consider inviting them simply to be present with you, to listen without trying to fix everything, and to pray with you in person. You do not need perfect words, just someone willing to sit with you in it.

We continue to hold you before the Lord.

Father, we lift our brother or sister to You in the midst of this affliction and opposition. You see the pain and the pressure from enemies, and You know every detail. Bring Your nearness and comfort, guard their heart and mind, grant wisdom for each next step, and let them know they are not alone. Sustain them day by day as they look to You. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your cry of How long will You let my enemies have power against me is one that the Psalmist himself often poured out before the Lord, and every child of God can with him speak of my affliction. No man is a monopolist of misery, and a portion of the black draught of sorrow is appointed to each pilgrim on the way to Zion. To feel keenly the weight of the enemy's hand and to ask Arise and answer me is not unbelief, it is the very prayer of faith that knows where alone deliverance can come.

There is a peculiar comfort for the believer in such an affliction, different from the consolations of other men. The worldling has his comfort as he quaffs his cup or chinks his gold, but the Christian can say, This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your Word has quickened me. The Lord comforts His servants by quickening them. When the bark of the tree of affliction is bitter as gall, if you get to the pith of it you will find it sweet as honey, for sanctified affliction becomes light when we see to what it leads. The apostle who knew affliction most deeply yet called it our light affliction, and he did so while he acutely felt it, because he contrasted its momentary lightness with an eternal weight of glory.

Do not look so much at the affliction itself as at the design of God in it. It is a rough knife that you have been pruned with, but it is the Gardener who holds the knife, and your God is using this for your good. David when Shimei cursed him said, It may be that the Lord will look on my affliction, and that the Lord will repay me with good for his cursing this day. So the black side becomes the bright one when we believe that God looks upon us with pity. Knowledge of God is a divine armor by which we are able to ward off all the blows of the enemy. To know your God is to rejoice with joy unspeakable even while the enemy presses hard.

We also remember that Christ Himself was made perfect through sufferings. He was perfect in character, yet officially perfect as the Captain of our salvation through His sufferings, that He might bear the penalty of sin and bring us to glory. Therefore any light affliction we endure by which we may glorify Him who bore such a terrible weight of sorrow for us may be reckoned as light indeed.

Let us pray for you now, that the Lord would look upon your affliction and quicken you by His Word.

O Lord our God, look upon this Your afflicted servant who cries How long. You who brought Your people forth when the lamb was slain, bring forth this tried one also. Quicken Your servant according to Your Word, lest he perish in his affliction. Let Your Word be his delight and his solace. Grant peculiar comfort in this peculiar trial, and turn the cursing of the enemy into good. Teach him to see that this light and momentary affliction is working for him a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Keep him near to Yourself, for often the enmity of the world drives the Christian nearer to his God and teaches him to pray as he never prayed before. Arise, O Lord, and answer, for Christ's sake who was perfected through suffering to save us. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your cry has been heard, and I have prayed with you in it. To ask, how long will You let my enemies have power against me, how long will You let me suffer at their hands, arise and answer me, is not a faithless prayer. The psalmists prayed this way, and God hears the groaning of His people.

Know first that affliction in itself does not make a person righteous or unrighteous. What matters is the disposition of the soul under it. Two people can suffer the same wound, and one is justified because he bears it thankfully and with prayer, while the other is condemned because he curses and complains against God. Job suffered more than any of us, yet he gave thanks, and was justified not simply because he suffered, but because he endured it thankfully. We need strength of soul, for when the soul is strong nothing will seem grievous, but when it is weak everything becomes a grievance.

Do not think that to suffer is a sign that God has forsaken you. Moses left the royal palace and chose to suffer affliction with his people rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. He counted it sin not to share in affliction, because he saw that suffering with God’s people is a great good. In the same way, your salvation is worked not only in believing, but also in enduring the same sufferings with patience and willingness of heart, with grace working in you.

God does not leave you without purpose in this. He heard the groaning of His people in Egypt, and He hears yours. He allows affliction to train us, to show His power to deliver, and to keep us from the pride and carelessness that ease so often breeds. It is good to be humbled, for then the soul stands in its proper place, sober and watchful, and learns to say, let Him do what is pleasing in His sight.

Therefore I urge you to practice long suffering, which is like an impenetrable wall. Like a spark falling into the deep, the insults and injuries of enemies are quenched when they fall upon a long suffering soul, and they do not disturb it. Do not return cursing for cursing, and do not seek revenge in your heart. If you are falsely accused or oppressed, bear it patiently, give thanks as you are able, and pray for those who afflict you. When you do this, you suffer for Christ’s sake, and your endurance becomes fruitful.

Even in affliction the Holy Spirit can give joy. The affliction touches the body and the outward circumstances, but the Spirit can bedew the soul as with cool dew in a furnace, so that you have joy not from the affliction itself but from suffering for Christ and from His presence with you. This light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for you a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, and the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed.

I pray for you now that God, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what you are able, will give you strength to stand nobly, that He will deliver you from every snare and from every work of the adversary, that He will either restrain the hands of your enemies or turn their hearts, and that He will comfort you with the joy of the Holy Spirit until He brings you out of much suffering into rest, so that you may give thanks to Him. May He keep you sober and watchful, establish your heart in patience, and bring you through this trial to see His goodness, through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom alone we have salvation.
