Chrysostom
Beloved
You hate the sin and yet you fall. This is the very misery the Apostle describes: the good that I would I do not, but the evil I would not, that I do. And so the law of God has done its work within you, shining light upon the uncleanness, making you cry out that you are wretched. But do not stop at the cry, for the law shows the wound but Christ gives the healing. You know it is demonic, and indeed the devil roars like a lion seeking whom he may devour. But call to mind the deliverance Paul received from the lion’s mouth, and hear him say, “The Lord will deliver me from every evil work.” The same Lord stands ready to deliver you, not only from the danger but from the very desire, if you will fight with the weapons He gives.
Let the terror of hell be always before your eyes. I do not say this to drive you to despair, but to guard you. A soul that trembles at the judgment seat cannot easily play with sin. When the temptation strikes, plant yourself firmly in that dread moment when every secret will be laid bare, and the fire that burns but never consumes awaits the impure. This fear is a medicine, sharp yet lifesaving. But you must also turn from all that feeds the fire. Guard your eyes, for they are the gates of desire. Govern your thoughts, for out of the heart proceed evil things. You want the Holy Spirit to cleanse you? Then lend your own hand to the work by fleeing occasions of sin, by fasting, by prayer poured out like tears. Many have been tortured in the body and refused deliverance that they might gain a better resurrection; can you not endure a little violence to your fleshly lusts for the sake of eternal life?
Do not lean on your own strength, for you have none. That is why you fall. Run to Christ, the true physician, and cry out with the whole Church, “Lord, save me!” I will pray for you, and the faithful will pray, but let your own voice rise louder still. Hate this sin more than death, and when you fall, do not lie in the mire congratulating yourself on your guilt. Rise at once, wash the stain with groans, and take up the battle again. The ministration of righteousness is far more glorious than the condemnation; grace can make your soul whiter than snow. Only do not make peace with the passion. Let the very pain of your struggle become a proof that the Spirit is still striving with you. Fight on, and He will not suffer you to depart with condemnation, but will present you pure before the Father.
