You bring this matter of the mechanic and the faulty repair before the throne of grace, and that is well. Yet let us take heed how we pray. It is a very good rule, when a man makes you a promise, to understand it in the narrowest sense. Let him interpret it liberally, if he pleases; but he is actually bound to give you no more than the bare terms of his promise will imply. You have the word of this mechanic; I have nothing to say against hoping he will prove honest. But if his word fails, has God's word failed? There stands His promise. It is not, He may be delivered, but he shall be. Note well the everlasting shall of God, irrevocable, unalterable, unquestionable, irresistible.
You ask for a miraculous fixing in July of a coming year. Our times are in His hand. I love for myself to live upon God's naked promise. I cannot get farther than this. God's promise may tarry, but it never fails, and if it seems to fail for the time being, will it fail forevermore? Has God forgotten to be gracious? What hot shots these are for unbelief! Let us settle it in our hearts to be resigned to this common lot. Beggars are not to be choosers, we say, and certainly pensioners on God's bounty ought not pick holes and find fault with the Lord's providing.
Consider what the check engine light is, a little trouble, a small anxiety. Such fears fall to the lot of all when their worldly goods are disordered. But what is this compared to the deep disorder of the soul? Some say this talking about sinners coming to Christ just as they are and trusting in Him alone is very dangerous. It is free to all the sick, but there is a notion about town that nobody may enter there except those who do something to heal themselves. Oh, for God's sake, do not deceive yourselves. If your faith does not make you holy, it is not worth a gnat.
Now hear God's promise and lay hold upon it: I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy. You pray for a free fixing of steel and wire. I tell you of a free fixing of soul and spirit. I must have His promise before I am wise in my confidence. The Christian has God's promise for it. He believes the Bible to be God's Book, and when he finds God saying anything to him, he believes it to be true. We are bound to leave our affairs in God's hands, and then, instead of being idlers and loiterers, we are to go and work in His vineyard while it is called today. Drive out all unbelief. Whatever he may be, if he trusts his soul with Christ and with Christ alone, he cannot be cast away unless the promise of God can be of no effect. I will trust and not be afraid.

The engine light is not the true check that matters. You seek what you call a miracle, but you treat the Almighty as a garage hand bound to your command. You do not pray; you dictate terms. You say He must do this in July 2026, in this place, through this man, and for no cost, as if the Lord of heaven and earth were subject to an invoice. This is not faith; this is a summons served upon divinity.
Consider whether the first repair failed not by chance but as medicine for the soul. The world is full of those who want the sign and the fix, yet when Christ spoke of the only sign He would give, they heard an enigma and turned away. You demand a free mending of metal and wire, but your own heart has suffered damage far older than any vehicle, thirty and eight years and more, and you have not yet said, "Lord, make me whole." You rush about seeking a ### or another man to put you into the pool, when Christ stands before you asking, "Do you wish to be healed?"
Why a free repair? Because you feel a debt is owed. But recall the promises made to Abraham. He was given the inheritance by promise, not by Law, not because he had kept a contract that forced God's hand. What was promised to him and to his seed was not a chariot repaired in this world, but the world itself as an heir of righteousness by faith. You, like the Ninevites, are not without hope: repentance can reverse the denunciation. Yet if you appear unworthy, the mere fact of a promise pleases you will not advantage you. The Law brought wrath because of transgression; grace alone makes the promise firm.
Therefore, examine what promise you cling to. Is it the promise that a machine shall run without trouble, secured by a mechanic's word? That is a promise of this age, which rust destroys. Or is it the promise that the Lord of all will come and make His abode with you? If you had that, what need of the car, the sun, or the moon? He Himself is Light. Do not seek to be a minister of your own desires, forcing signs from heaven as Satan fashions himself into an angel of light. The miracle you need is not a costless repair, but a costly repentance that sets you free from bitter slavery to things that perish. Give up demanding your will on earth as if it were already enacted in heaven. Seek first the healing of the soul, and then, whether the vehicle runs or stops, you will possess the promise that cannot be made void.
