The Kiss of Welcome
Intercessory Prayer
Hezekiah and the Ambassadors, or Vainglory Rebuked
We join with you in lifting up this man before the Lord and we thank you for bringing his need before us so we can seek God's will together in Jesus' name.

We understand your desire for him to know real love and to learn compassion, and this is a beautiful and godly desire. The world often teaches a counterfeit love that is selfish and fleeting, but real love comes from God Himself. As Scripture tells us, Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:7-8. And again, We love him, because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19. True compassion also flows from knowing Christ, for we are called to be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32. And to put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance. Colossians 3:12.

We pray that God will soften his heart and open his eyes to this kind of love. A heart that is closed to love is often hardened by hurt, pride, or sin, and only God can truly transform it. He promises, I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26. Real love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5. We pray he will come to understand and walk in this love.

We also want to gently encourage you that we have access to the Father only through Jesus Christ. You did not mention His name in your request, and we want to remind you that it is only by the name of Jesus that we can come boldly before God and be saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If this man does not yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior, his greatest need is to believe on Him, that his sins are forgiven and he receives new life. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but God so loved us that He gave His Son to die for us and rise again. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. Romans 10:9.

So we pray together:

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift this man up to You. You know his heart, his hurts, and the walls he has built. We ask that You draw him to Yourself, that he would first know Your perfect love and compassion through Jesus. Soften his stony heart, Lord, and give him a heart of flesh that is tender toward You and toward others. Teach him what real, selfless, agape love is, not as the world gives, but as You love us. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that compassion, kindness, and forgiveness may flow from him. If there is any hardness, bitterness, or unforgiveness, we ask You to heal it. Lead him into truth and help him to walk in love as Christ also loved us. We pray that he would come to know Jesus deeply and be transformed by Your grace. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray for him and to show him the love and compassion you are praying he will learn, being an example of Christ’s love to him. Continue in prayer and trust that God is working even when we cannot see it.

Thank you for bringing ### before the Lord with such care. Wanting someone to know real love and to grow in compassion is a beautiful burden to carry, and we are glad to carry it with you.

We have found that an open heart is not something we can argue someone into. The heart is the wellspring of a person's life, where thoughts and feelings and choices come together, and lasting softness there comes as God works within. Real love also grows as we learn to give and receive in ways the other person can actually feel, and compassion grows as we learn to step into another's shoes and stay present with their pain.

One gentle way to walk with ### is to keep creating small, safe openings for him. Instead of pressing for change, you might ask open questions that invite him to share in his own words, like what has been weighing on him or what kindness has meant to him. And continue to model the love you are praying for him to know, in steady, everyday ways.

Father, we lift ### to You in Jesus' name. Soften his heart and draw him toward Your love, teach him to receive love and to show compassion to others, and give wisdom and patience to the one praying for him as they love him well. Amen.

It is a good and tender thing that you have brought ### before the throne of grace, asking that his heart might be opened to real love and to compassion. We join you in this prayer, and we ask the Lord to answer it according to His own holy and loving will.

Real love is not a mere passion or sentiment of our own making. The Scripture tells us, We love him, because he first loved us. Love has for its parent the love of God shed abroad in our hearts. Until a man knows the love of Christ which passes knowledge, he cannot truly love at all, for there is nothing but love that can create love.

For this reason our prayer for ### is first that the outer golden door of faith may be opened in him by the loving hand of the Holy Spirit, and then that the inner pearly gate of affection may be thrown open also. They who trust Christ, love Christ. When a sinner sees that Christ stood before God offering a sacrifice of propitiation by which the guilt of man is removed, and beholds that boundless love in giving His well beloved Son to die for us, nothing so wounds the heart and nothing so heals it as that dying love.

We pray that the Lord would melt what is flinty in his heart and give him a new heart and a right spirit. That prayer of the hymn is fitting here, Lord, melt this flinty heart to tears, this heart shall yield to death or love. Christ's blood will prove more than a match for the evil of the heart, His Spirit can renew a man and make him a new creature, so that the things he once despised he shall love, and he shall learn compassion because he has first received compassion.

True compassion flows from having felt the pity of God ourselves. When sorrow swells the laden breast, only a broken heart made whole by the bleeding heart of Jesus can feel rightly the woe of others. May ### come to know that fountain which is still open for sin and for uncleanness, where Him that cometh unto Christ He will in no wise cast out. There he will find not only pardon, but the grace which restores the heart to tenderness and holiness.

So let us pray together: O Lord our God, look in mercy upon ###. Open the door of faith to him, that he may receive Jesus as He is offered in the gospel, as Prophet and Priest and King. Let him see how greatly Thou hast loved him in giving Thy Son, and teach him in return to love Thee with all his heart and soul and strength and mind. Give him a heart of flesh for a heart of stone, that he may know real love, even Thy holy love which is pure and self giving and faithful, and may show forth that same compassion to others which he has received from Thee. Make him to live in Christ and Christ to live in his heart. We ask this not for any love that is according to the flesh, but for that love which Thou hast ordained and which abides, for Thy glory and for his eternal good. Amen.

Continue to hold ### up before the Lord in faithful intercession, trusting that He who remembers His works of grace toward His chosen will hear the cry of a loving intercessor.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
