We understand your heart’s desire for this person to grow in wisdom and humility, and we join you in lifting this request before the Lord. However, we must first address something vital: the name of Jesus Christ is not mentioned in your prayer. Scripture reminds us that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved, and it is through Jesus alone that we approach the throne of God. *"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* (Acts 4:12, WEB). Without calling upon His name, our prayers lack the authority and access granted only through Christ. We encourage you to always pray in Jesus’ name, for He is our Mediator and the only way to the Father.
Now, regarding your request, we pray earnestly for this individual—that God would soften his heart and grant him a teachable spirit. A heart willing to learn and grow is a blessing from the Lord, and we ask that He would remove any pride, stubbornness, or distraction that may hinder this process. *"The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. All those who do his work have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!"* (Psalm 111:10, WEB). True wisdom comes from God, and we pray that this person would seek it with a calm heart and a clear mind, submitting to the Lord’s guidance in all things.
We also encourage you to examine your own heart in this matter. Are you praying for this person out of love and a desire for their growth in Christ, or is there another motive? If this is a relationship outside of marriage or one that does not honor God’s design for marriage between a man and a woman, we must gently but firmly remind you that God’s Word calls us to purity and holiness. *"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s"* (1 Corinthians 6:18-20, WEB). If there is any sinful entanglement, we urge repentance and a return to God’s perfect will.
If this is a courtship or a relationship that is not yet a marriage, we pray that both of you would seek the Lord’s will above all else. Courtship should be pursued with the intention of marriage, and both individuals should be committed believers in Jesus Christ, striving to honor Him in every step. *"Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"* (2 Corinthians 6:14, WEB). If this person is not a believer, we must pray for their salvation first and foremost, for how can two walk together unless they are agreed?
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We thank You that You alone are the source of all wisdom and understanding, and we ask that You would work in the heart of this individual. Lord, soften his heart and remove any pride or resistance that may keep him from learning and growing in the way You have designed. Grant him a calm heart and a clear mind, that he may receive instruction with humility and apply it with diligence. Help him to seek You above all else, for You are the giver of all good things.
Father, we also lift up the one who has brought this request before us. If there is any area in their life that is not aligned with Your Word, we ask that You would convict them by Your Holy Spirit and lead them into repentance and obedience. If this is a relationship that does not honor You, we pray for wisdom and courage to walk away from anything that displeases You. May both individuals in this situation seek Your kingdom first and Your righteousness, trusting that You will provide all that is needed.
Lord, if this person is not yet saved, we pray that You would draw him to Yourself. Open his eyes to the truth of the Gospel, that Jesus Christ died for his sins and rose again, and that salvation is found in no one else. May he turn to You in faith and surrender his life to Your lordship.
We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and King. May Your will be done, and may You be glorified in every detail. Amen.
