Pray for willpower to defeat lust, don't use your own power

We join with you in this request and we praise God that you have recognized the truth that victory over lust cannot come through your own willpower but only through His strength working in you. It is wise and humble to confess that our flesh is weak and that we cannot conquer sin on our own.

The Scriptures teach us that our own strength will fail us, but His grace is sufficient. As it is written, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness 2 Corinthians 12:9. We are also reminded, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me Philippians 4:13. This is not a call to try harder in the flesh, but to surrender and walk by the Spirit, for Walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh Galatians 5:16.

Lust begins in the heart and mind, and God calls us to purity and holiness. We are commanded to Flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18 and to not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts Romans 6:12. Lust, when entertained, gives birth to sin, and sin when it is grown brings forth death James 1:15. For those who are unmarried, God calls us to abstain from all sexual activity outside of marriage, for any such intimacy is fornication and is contrary to His design. For those who are married, we are to remain faithful and pure within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman as God ordained. We must guard our eyes, our minds, and our hearts, for How can a young man keep his way pure By living according to your word Psalm 119:9, and I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you Psalm 119:11.

We also notice your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ. We gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and power over sin. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved and receive the Holy Spirit who empowers us to overcome temptation. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus for forgiveness and for daily strength, because No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who desires to be free from lust. We confess that in our own strength we can do nothing, but Your Spirit within us can give us victory. We ask You to forgive us for every lustful thought and deed, and to cleanse us by the blood of Jesus. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and teach us to walk by the Spirit so that we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Give us a love for Your Word, that we may hide it in our hearts. Give us the wisdom to flee temptation, to turn our eyes away from worthless things, and to make no provision for the flesh. Strengthen us in our inner being, renew our minds daily, and help us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. When temptation comes, show us the way of escape and give us the courage to take it. We trust not in our willpower but in Your mighty power to keep us pure until the day we might enter into a godly marriage that honors You, or to live faithfully within marriage if You have already provided a spouse. We ask all of this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our deliverer, amen.

We encourage you to continue in daily prayer, to feed daily on Scripture, to seek fellowship and accountability with mature believers, and to quickly flee from any place or screen or relationship that stirs lust. God is faithful to complete the work He has begun in you.

We appreciate your honesty in naming this struggle. Wanting to lean on God's strength instead of just trying harder in your own willpower is a humble and wise posture, and we want to stand with you in it.

One insight that helps many of us is the difference between trying and training. Trying is white knuckling in the moment, which quickly leaves us tired and discouraged. Training is the quiet, steady work of letting God form us over time through small, faithful choices. Growth in this area is rarely about one big moment of resolve, but about daily turning to Him so He can shape our desires and habits little by little. Seeing yourself as a work in progress in His hands can take off some of the pressure to be perfect right now.

A simple next step that may help is to choose one small, consistent rhythm to train with Him instead of fighting alone. For many that has been a brief morning prayer inviting God into the day ahead, especially the hours you know are hardest, and having one trusted, mature believer you can be honest with when temptation feels strong. Consistency matters more than intensity, and God often uses those ordinary, repeated moments to strengthen us.

We are praying for you and we will keep praying.

Father, we bring this dear brother before You and ask for Your strength where his own runs out. Guard his heart and mind, teach him to walk in Your ways, and give him hope as You shape him day by day. Lead him to supportive community and keep him close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is a true wisdom in your request, for you have not asked for more of your own power but for the power of God to be made perfect in your weakness. Human strength, even at its best, is derived strength and it will spend itself and fail, but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Apart from God our strength is not strength at all and must come to an end, yet with God in us we are made to stand and even to make hell tremble.

Scripture warns us plainly that God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any man, but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. Then when lust has conceived it brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings forth death. That is the pedigree of sin. To escape the corruption that is in the world through lust we need that higher nature which is born in us by regeneration, whereby we become partakers of the divine nature and are lifted up into familiarity with God.

It is not by the resolve of the flesh, saying I will believe more or I will be stronger, that victory comes, for such pride often leads to a decaying state and to believing less. Rather when there remains no strength in you, nor any ability of any kind, then fling yourself upon the divine strength and lay hold upon it. The Lord Himself says, I will strengthen them, and He will impart strength distinctly and directly from Himself. The Christian has no other strength than that which has come from God, and all the glory of his strength lies in God.

We will pray for you that the Lord will keep His promise that as your days so shall your strength be, and that He will teach you His statutes and increase your faith. May He who gives power to the faint and to them that have no might increases strength, fill you with His Spirit so that you may walk up and down in His name in purity, keeping yourself unspotted from the world, and offering to Him that worship which is pure and acceptable.

Let us pray together: O Lord our God, who art the glory of our strength, look upon this soul who confesses weakness and desires holiness. Forgive sin through the blood of Christ who died for the ungodly, and create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within. Impart Thine own strength, for we have none apart from Thee, and cause this Thy child to wait upon Thee and to be renewed day by day, that lust may be overcome not by human resolve but by Thy divine power dwelling within. Keep Thy servant in purity and in the path of life, to the glory of Thy name. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this honest request and for recognizing that victory over lust does not come from your own willpower. That desire to depend on God's strength rather than your own is right and biblical, and we join you in prayer.

We pray that God will fill you with His Spirit and strengthen you from within, so that you will not gratify the desires of the flesh but walk in purity and self control. We ask that when temptation comes, He will make His power known in your weakness, remind you that His grace is sufficient for you, and provide a way of escape so you can stand firm. We pray He will renew your mind through His Word, guard your heart and eyes, and help you to fix your thoughts on heavenly things rather than earthly desires.

Scripture teaches that the remedy for the lust of the flesh is life in the Spirit. To walk by the Spirit is to not fulfill those desires. This is not achieved by trying harder in your own strength, but by daily surrender, prayer, and dependence on Christ. His strength is made perfect when we admit our weakness and invite Him to work in us.

We encourage you to continue seeking Him each day through prayer and Scripture, to flee situations that stir temptation, to bring your struggle into the light with a trusted mature believer who can pray with you and hold you accountable, and to remember that God sees not only the present struggle but is preparing you for lasting holiness and hope. When you fall short, do not despair, but quickly turn back to Him, receive His forgiveness, and keep looking forward to the life He promises.

We are praying for you to know more of His presence, His peace, and His power at work in you, and to experience growing freedom as you rely on Him.
