I hear a heart that's deeply tired and frustrated, and I'm grateful you reached out. Joblessness wears on the soul, and when the answers don't come, it's easy to begin renegotiating our relationship with God: I'll do this if You'll do that. But that posture treats faith like a contract, and it shifts the foundation from trusting His grace to hoping in our own efforts. The very thing that pleases God, simple, childlike trust in Him, gets set aside in favor of a bargain He never asked for.
Think of Abraham. God's promise to him was staggering, and he had nothing in his hands to make it happen. Yet he didn't stagger at the promise; he was fully persuaded that what God had promised, God was able to perform. That faith was accounted to him as righteousness before he saw a single fulfillment. He believed God, and that very faith was the gift that made him right with God. The works came later, but the faith came first. Without faith, it's impossible to please God, because the one who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. Not the one who sets deadlines or suspends trust until the reward appears.
The urge to stop reading Scripture, to pull away from the gathered church, to lay down prayer until God "comes through" with a job, I understand the feeling. It's a cry for control when everything feels out of control. But prayer was never meant to be an instrument for getting our will done on earth; it's the place where we learn submission to the will of God. In the garden, even the Son of God prayed, "Not my will, but Yours be done." Prayer changes things, yes, but far more importantly, it changes us. If we view God only through the lens of what we lack, we'll spiral into despair and see Him as distant or angry. But His heart toward you is not defined by your unemployment. Those who are of faith are the children of Abraham, and they live by faith, not by sight.
Suspending your spiritual life won't force God's hand. He is debtor to no one. Everything He gives flows from grace, not from a sense of obligation. If we could twist His arm by withholding devotion, we'd make ourselves sovereign and Him a servant. That's not the God who stretched out the heavens. The testing of faith, and this is a real test, isn't for His benefit; He already knows your heart. The proving of faith develops patience, and patience is the companion of faith in receiving the promises. Rushing ahead of God's timing, trying to construct our own solutions, often just creates deeper trouble. Abraham did that with Hagar, and the scars lasted generations.
I won't tell you to just cheer up and pretend it doesn't hurt. But I am asking you not to abandon the very means God uses to sustain faith. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Withdraw from that, and the darkness grows thicker. You don't need a job to be welcome at the throne of grace. You are already accounted righteous in Christ Jesus if your trust is in Him. His righteousness is imputed to you by faith, not by your employment status. So pick up the Scriptures again, not as a bargaining chip, but as a hungry child opening a letter from a loving Father. Return to the assembly of the saints, not to earn favor, but because your soul needs the encouragement of those who have learned to inspire one another to look to God through faith, not at their own failures.
The just shall live by faith. That word was given to a troubled prophet watching his nation decline, and it's just as true for you now. God is still the God who works wonders. He is able to do what He has promised. Let your faith, even when it feels weak, look back at the cross and forward to His faithfulness. Don't terminate your connection to the only One who can truly satisfy, no matter what your bank account says. He sees the heart that trusts Him, and He calls that rich.
