We come before the Lord with this question, seeking His wisdom and understanding. It is a profound inquiry that touches on the nature of prayer, faith, and the character of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Let us turn to Scripture to illuminate these truths.

If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it." This promise is clear—when we pray in Jesus' name, aligning our will with His, He hears and answers. However, we must also consider James 4:3, which says, "You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures." Prayer is not a transaction where we demand our desires; it is a relationship where we seek God’s will above our own.
When Jesus speaks of the vine and the branches in John 15:1-5, He says, "I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." Here, Jesus is teaching that abiding in Him—remaining in His love, His Word, and His will—produces good fruit. A "bad tree" does not bear good fruit because it is not connected to the life-giving vine. If we are not seeing answers to prayer, it may be because we are not abiding in Christ as we should. Are we truly seeking His will, or are we clinging to our own desires? Are we bearing the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)—or are we allowing sin to hinder our connection to Him?
Jesus also warns in Matthew 7:15-20 about false prophets who appear as sheep but are wolves in disguise. He says, "By their fruits you will know them. A good tree can’t produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit." Here, Jesus is not saying that He, the perfect and holy Son of God, could ever be a "bad tree." Rather, He is contrasting those who are truly His followers—who bear good fruit—with those who claim to follow Him but do not. If our lives do not reflect the fruit of the Spirit, if we are not walking in obedience to His Word, then we cannot expect to see the fullness of His promises in our prayers.
Let us also remember that God’s answers to prayer are not always what we expect. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," says Yahweh. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." Sometimes, God’s "no" or "wait" is an answer of love, protecting us from what we cannot see or preparing us for something greater. His silence is not absence; it is an invitation to trust Him more deeply.
