Faithful Servant
5 October 2025
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
The Lord be with you! The recent announcement of the appointment of Rt Revd Dame ### as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury has been the subject of much attention and response. We continue to pray for the Church of England and the See of Canterbury as Bishop ### takes on this role. As a Province we must express our unease and reservation over her appointment. Bishop ### chaired the Living in Love and Faith project in the Church of England which led to the decision in 2023 to allow the blessings of same-sex marriages. She described the decision as “[a] moment of hope”. This is a departure and total mis-alignment from what Scripture teaches regarding marriage and sexuality. It is also a departure from traditional Anglican orthodoxy. Article 20 of the 39 Articles of Religion states that “it is not lawful for the Church to ordain anything that is contrary to God's Word written”. On one hand, from a Provincial perspective, the appointment of Bishop ### does not affect us substantively because each province is autonomous. At the same time, we cannot deny that the Archbishop of Canterbury has played a role of significant influence in the history of the Anglican Communion. As such, the appointment of an Archbishop of Canterbury who, in the course of her work, was instrumental in the unacceptable compromise of Scripture places us in a challenging and invidious position. With respect, under God’s overarching presidency, we will not be able to recognise her as the “first amongst equals”, both in terms of leadership and influence within the Global Anglican Communion. We had earlier prayed in hope that the next appointee of the Archbishop of Canterbury would be a candidate who upholds Scripture and the same God-given principles of orthodox faith that we practice and affirm in our Province. The failure to do so was a missed opportunity for the Global Anglican Communion to find common cause and re-unite through the affirmation of traditional teachings of God’s Word. We recognize that many members of our Dioceses are understandably concerned about the appointment and the state of the Anglican Communion. As a Province we are well-versed and committed to the principles that we stand for, and we urge you to join us in prayer for God’s truth and purpose to ultimately prevail. May He grant us discernment and use us to shine forth His light in a time of darkness. Glory be to God! With every blessing in Christ, The Most Revd Dr ### Bishop of ### Primate of the Province of the Anglican Church in South East Asia

We stand with you in this time of deep concern and solemn reflection, lifting our voices together before the Lord as we seek His wisdom, truth, and intervention in the face of this troubling appointment. The Scriptures are clear that God’s design for marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, established from the very beginning of creation. As Jesus Himself affirmed in Matthew 19:4-6, *"Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh’? So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart."* To bless or affirm anything outside of this divine design is to reject the authority of Scripture and embrace a path that leads away from God’s truth.

The Apostle Paul warns us in Romans 1:24-27 of the consequences of exchanging God’s truth for a lie, particularly in matters of sexuality: *"Therefore God also gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves, who exchanged God’s truth for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator... For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For their women changed the natural function into that which is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural function of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another, men doing what is inappropriate with men, and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error."* This is not a matter of opinion or cultural progression—it is a clear and eternal standard set by God Himself. To call what is sinful "a moment of hope" is to invert the very nature of hope, which is found only in repentance and alignment with God’s Word.

We also recall the words of the Apostle Peter, who exhorts us in 1 Peter 4:17, *"For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. If it begins first with us, what will happen to those who don’t obey the Good News of God?"* The Church is called to be a beacon of truth, not a reflection of the world’s shifting morals. When leaders within the Church compromise on the foundational truths of Scripture, they risk leading many astray. This is not a matter of mere disagreement—it is a departure from the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3).

We are grieved that this appointment represents a missed opportunity for the Anglican Communion to stand firmly on the unchanging Word of God. Instead, it deepens the division among believers and undermines the unity that can only be found in Christ. Yet, we are not without hope, for our trust is not in human institutions or leaders, but in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). We must pray fervently for repentance, for a return to biblical fidelity, and for the Holy Spirit to convict hearts and restore truth to its rightful place.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving the departure from Your truth that we see unfolding within the Church. Lord, You have called Your people to be holy, set apart, and faithful to Your Word. Yet we witness leaders who have chosen to embrace the wisdom of this world rather than the wisdom that comes from above. Father, we ask for Your mercy. Convict the heart of the newly appointed Archbishop and all who have strayed from Your commands. Open their eyes to the gravity of their actions and lead them to repentance. Raise up faithful voices within the Anglican Communion who will boldly proclaim Your truth without compromise. Strengthen those who remain steadfast in Your Word, and grant them courage to stand firm in the face of opposition.

Lord, we pray for unity—but not a unity built on compromise, but a unity founded on Your truth. Bring restoration to Your Church, that she may once again be a light in the darkness, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Protect Your people from deception, and let Your Spirit move mightily to bring revival and reformation. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone has the authority to build His Church. May His will be done, and may His Kingdom come in power and purity. Amen.

To our brothers and sisters who share in this burden, we urge you to remain steadfast. Do not grow weary in contending for the faith. Remember the words of Joshua 1:9, *"Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go."* The battle we face is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Arm yourselves with the Word of God, pray without ceasing, and trust that the Lord will vindicate His truth.

We also encourage you to seek out fellowships and communities that remain faithful to Scripture, where you can be nourished and equipped to stand firm. Let this be a time not of despair, but of renewed commitment to the truth. The Lord is sovereign, and He will not allow His Church to be ultimately overcome by falsehood. Our hope is in Him alone.

Dear friends,

We're right there with you, feeling the weight of this situation. It's a time for solemn reflection and united prayer. We've been given a clear mandate in Scripture: marriage is between one man and one woman. Anything outside this divine design is a rejection of God's truth. We must stand firm on this unchanging Word, even when it's not popular or convenient.

The appointment of the new Archbishop of Canterbury is troubling, as it represents a departure from biblical orthodoxy. We prayed for a candidate who upholds Scripture and traditional Anglican orthodoxy, but unfortunately, that's not what we've seen. This missed opportunity could have been a chance for the Anglican Communion to find common cause and reunite through affirming traditional teachings.

But let's not lose heart. Our trust is in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We must pray fervently for repentance, a return to biblical fidelity, and for the Holy Spirit to convict hearts and restore truth to its rightful place.

Let's pray together:

Lord, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving the departure from Your truth that we see unfolding within the Church. You have called Your people to be holy, set apart, and faithful to Your Word. Yet, we witness leaders choosing the wisdom of this world over the wisdom that comes from above. Have mercy, Lord.

Lord, we pray for unity, but not a unity built on compromise. We long for a unity founded on Your truth. Amen.

Let's encourage one another to remain steadfast, to not grow weary in contending for the faith. The battle we face is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness. Arm yourselves with the Word of God, pray without ceasing, and trust that the Lord will vindicate His truth. Seek out fellowships and communities that remain faithful to Scripture, where you can be nourished and equipped to stand firm. Let this be a time of renewed commitment to the truth, for our hope is in Him alone.
