Faithful Servant
The recent announcement of the appointment of Rt Revd Dame ### as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury has been the subject of much attention and response. We continue to pray for the Church of England and the See of Canterbury as Bishop ### takes on this role. As a Province we must express our unease and reservation over her appointment. Bishop ### chaired the Living in Love and Faith project in the Church of England which led to the decision in 2023 to allow the blessings of same-sex marriages. She described the decision as “[a] moment of hope”. This is a departure and total mis-alignment from what Scripture teaches regarding marriage and sexuality. It is also a departure from traditional Anglican orthodoxy. Article 20 of the 39 Articles of Religion states that “it is not lawful for the Church to ordain anything that is contrary to God's Word written”. On one hand, from a Provincial perspective, the appointment of Bishop ### does not affect us substantively because each province is autonomous. At the same time, we cannot deny that the Archbishop of Canterbury has played a role of significant influence in the history of the Anglican Communion. As such, the appointment of an Archbishop of Canterbury who, in the course of her work, was instrumental in the unacceptable compromise of Scripture places us in a challenging and invidious position. With respect, under God’s overarching presidency, we will not be able to recognise her as the “first amongst equals”, both in terms of leadership and influence within the Global Anglican Communion. We had earlier prayed in hope that the next appointee of the Archbishop of Canterbury would be a candidate who upholds Scripture and the same God-given principles of orthodox faith that we practice and affirm in our Province. The failure to do so was a missed opportunity for the Global Anglican Communion to find common cause and re-unite through the affirmation of traditional teachings of God’s Word. We recognize that many members of our Dioceses are understandably concerned about the appointment and the state of the Anglican Communion. As a Province we are well-versed and committed to the principles that we stand for, and we urge you to join us in prayer for God’s truth and purpose to ultimately prevail. May He grant us discernment and use us to shine forth His light in a time of darkness. Glory be to God!

We join you in deep concern and lament over the appointment of the new Archbishop of Canterbury, whose leadership in the *Living in Love and Faith* project has led to the tragic departure from Scripture’s clear teaching on marriage and sexuality. The Word of God is unchanging, and His design for marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6) cannot be redefined by human tradition or cultural pressure. The apostle Paul warns us in Romans 1:24-27 that exchanging God’s truth for a lie leads to moral confusion, and we must stand firm against such compromise.

The Church of England’s decision to bless same-sex unions is not merely a matter of disagreement—it is a direct contradiction of God’s Word. As you rightly noted, Article 20 of the 39 Articles declares that the Church has no authority to ordain anything contrary to Scripture. Yet, this appointment reflects a broader trend of theological drift, where human wisdom is exalted above divine revelation. We must pray fervently for repentance and a return to biblical fidelity, for without it, the Anglican Communion risks further fragmentation and spiritual decline.

While we respect the autonomy of provinces, we cannot ignore the influence of the See of Canterbury. History shows that when leaders abandon Scripture, the consequences ripple far beyond their immediate jurisdiction. We stand with you in refusing to recognize this appointment as a legitimate expression of godly leadership. Instead, we must contend for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3) and pray that God would raise up faithful shepherds who will boldly proclaim His truth without compromise.

Let us pray together:

**Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving the departure from Your Word in the Church of England. Lord, You have called Your people to be a light in the darkness, yet we see confusion and rebellion taking root. We ask for Your mercy—turn the hearts of leaders back to Your truth. Raise up faithful men and women who will stand unashamedly on Scripture, even when it is unpopular. Strengthen Your Church, O God, and unite those who remain steadfast in Your Word. May this season of compromise be met with a mighty move of Your Spirit, bringing repentance, revival, and restoration. We pray for wisdom for all who are troubled by these developments, that they would not grow weary in doing good but would stand firm in the faith. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.**

We encourage you to continue speaking boldly, not in anger or division, but in love for the truth and for the souls of those who are being led astray. The battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12), and our weapons are prayer, Scripture, and unwavering faith. May God grant us all discernment, courage, and a deep reliance on His Word as we navigate these challenging times. His truth will prevail!

We're right there with you, feeling the weight of this appointment. It's a stark reminder of the importance of standing firm on God's Word, especially when cultural winds blow in different directions. We must remember that truth is not determined by majority vote or personal preference, but by what God has revealed in His Word.

As we continue to pray, let's ask God to give our brothers and sisters in the Church of England courage to speak out, even in the face of opposition. We should also pray for the Archbishop-elect, that God would soften her heart and bring her into alignment with His truth. We can't forget to intercede for the Church of England as a whole, that they would turn back to God's design for marriage and sexuality.

And let's not forget to pray for unity among believers. We may not agree on everything, but we're all part of the same Body of Christ. Let's ask God to help us love one another well, even in the midst of disagreement.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
