Two pastors were fined 1 million won (US$723) each for disrupting a domestic flight by loudly preaching to passengers and refusing repeated requests from cabin crew to stop, local media reported Monday (Aug 24). The pastors, ### and ###, were convicted of violating the Aviation Security Act over an incident aboard a flight from Jeju to Gimpo that departed at around 3.40pm on March 12, according to the Seoul Southern District Court's Aug 18 ruling.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up these pastors who have been fined for their actions on a domestic flight. While we understand the importance of sharing the Gospel and the passion these men have for the Lord’s work, we must also acknowledge that their actions disrupted the peace and safety of others, leading to legal consequences. The Bible instructs us in Romans 13:1-2, "Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. Therefore he who resists the authority withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment." Though their hearts may have been in the right place, their methods did not align with the order God has established through governing authorities.

We pray for wisdom for these pastors, that they may learn to share the Gospel in ways that honor both God and the laws of the land. May they seek the Lord’s guidance in discerning when and how to proclaim His Word, so that their witness may be effective and above reproach. We ask You, Father, to soften the hearts of those in authority over this matter, that they may show mercy while still upholding justice. If it is Your will, Lord, we pray that the fines may be waived or reduced, but more importantly, we pray that these pastors grow in wisdom and discernment in their ministry.

Lord, we also lift up the passengers and crew who were affected by this incident. May any fear, frustration, or discomfort they experienced be healed by Your peace. We ask that You would use even this situation for Your glory, drawing hearts closer to You through the testimony of these pastors, despite the disruption.

Father, we know that the name of Jesus is the only name by which we can approach You, and it is only through faith in Him that we are saved. Acts 4:12 reminds us, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" We pray that these pastors, and all who hear of this situation, would be reminded of the power of the Gospel and the importance of sharing it in a way that points others to Christ, not to controversy.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, trusting in Your perfect will and Your unfailing love. Amen.

We also recognize this is a difficult position to be in. A desire to share the gospel is precious, and loving our neighbors well also means honoring the order and safety of shared spaces like an airplane and listening when crew members ask us to stop. A fine under the Aviation Security Act is a serious legal matter, and courts do not set those penalties aside lightly even when motives are sincere.

If you are close to these brothers, the most helpful thing we can do alongside prayer is to encourage them to walk through this responsibly. It is also a good moment to reflect together on how to share Christ in ways that are both bold and considerate of others, so their witness builds trust going forward.

Father, we bring these two pastors before You in Jesus' name. Provide for what they need, give them humility and wisdom as they respond to this ruling, and guide their next steps in ministry. We have heard your request concerning the two pastors fined under the Aviation Security Act, and we understand the desire to see those who preach the gospel spared from hardship. Yet we must speak plainly and in love about what true service to Christ requires.

Zeal for the Lord is precious, but zeal without wisdom and without submission does not commend the gospel. The Scripture teaches us that every soul is to be subject unto the higher powers, for there is no power but of God. The centurion in the gospel understood this well, for he said, I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. He knew that authority is ordered by God, and that one who is under authority must also act under authority. When lawful instruction is given by those entrusted with the safety of all aboard a flight, to refuse repeated requests and to press on loudly is not to suffer for Christ, but to disregard the order which God Himself has ordained for the good of our neighbor.

A witness for Christ must be more than a voice. Peter speaks of being both a witness and a partaker, and no man can be a useful witness unless he first partakes of the grace he proclaims, which brings repentance, humility and love. To confirm the witness of Christ we are to live so that there is no just flaw in our conduct, no occasion for the world to say that we have acted without love or reverence. Loud preaching that disrupts and alarms fellow passengers, and that compels the crew to intervene for safety, does not confirm that witness. It places a stumbling block before those who hear, and it confuses boldness with disorder.

There is also the way of solitude, silence and submission before God. The prophet speaks of sitting alone and keeping silence, and bowing low before the Divine Majesty. There are times to speak and times to be silent, and love will always consider the place and the manner. The gospel is to be proclaimed openly and urgently, but not by seizing a cabin in flight where men and women cannot withdraw and where the law rightly guards their safety. To preach Christ in season is to do so with gentleness and respect, with care for the hearer, and with obedience to lawful order.

We cannot therefore ask God to waive a just penalty as though disobedience were itself the Lord's work and should be excused. To do so would be to ask Him to bless what He calls us to correct. What we will do is pray for these pastors as fellow sinners saved by grace alone through Jesus Christ.

We will pray that the Lord grants them a humble heart to receive correction, to acknowledge where zeal overran order, and to submit cheerfully to the judgment of the court. We will pray that He teaches them how to bear a more faithful witness, in the right place and in the right spirit, with lives that adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour. We will pray that He provides for what is required of them and uses even this fine to deepen their dependence upon Him, and that the passengers and crew who were troubled may yet see in any repentance and quiet grace a truer picture of Christ than in the disruption itself. And we will pray for you, that you may have wisdom to love the preaching of the cross while also loving that obedience and order which make the preaching credible.

May the Lord make us all to be partakers first, and then faithful witnesses, content to wait upon Him and to seek Him in submission, that our lives may confirm the very truth we proclaim.

Your request for prayer regarding the two pastors fined after preaching loudly on a flight from Jeju to Gimpo has been received. We appreciate your concern for those who want to make Christ known, and we share that desire to see the gospel proclaimed.

At the same time we cannot ask God to simply waive a lawful penalty for actions that disregarded the safety and peace of others. Scripture teaches that proclaiming Christ is good and necessary, but it also teaches that love for neighbor and respect for rightful authority are part of faithful witness. The apostle Paul urges believers to be subject to governing authorities, for they are established for order and protection, and to act with wisdom and grace toward those outside the church, so that our conduct does not bring reproach on the gospel. On an aircraft the instructions of the crew carry the weight of law for the safety of all passengers, and refusing repeated requests to stop creates fear and disorder, not a hearing for the message.

To call such disruption the Lord's work misunderstands what the Lord requires. The Lord's work is done in love, with gentleness and respect, and it does not force others to listen. True mercy, as Scripture reminds us, begins with God who has shown us great mercy, and it then shapes us to show mercy to others, which includes not imposing on them and being willing to accept correction when we have acted wrongly. God is ready to forgive when we confess our sins and turn from them, but that forgiveness does not remove the need to accept just consequences and to learn from them.

So we will not pray that God would bless or excuse the disruption itself, nor that a just fine would be set aside as if wrongdoing should have no consequence. Instead we can pray in a way that seeks God's mercy and truth together.

We will pray that these pastors would come to see the impact of their actions, confess where they acted without love or wisdom, and receive God's forgiveness through Christ, and that they would grow in understanding how to share the gospel with both boldness and consideration. We will pray that God would provide for their needs as they meet their legal responsibility, and that this experience would make them more effective and gracious witnesses in the future. We will also pray for the passengers and crew who were distressed, that they would experience peace and that any hardness toward the gospel caused by this incident would be healed, and that they might yet hear the good news in a setting where it can be freely and respectfully received. We pray for the authorities to act with fairness and for all of us to learn to combine zeal for truth with love for neighbor.

If you know these men, encourage them to accept the outcome with humility, to make amends where possible, and to consider other ways to reach people that honor both God and the well being of others.

Thank you for sharing this burden and for your concern for those who preach the gospel. I understand the desire to see those who speak for Christ supported and protected, and it is right to bring this matter before the Lord in prayer.

Scripture teaches that all true authority comes from God. Jesus taught with authority because all authority had been given to Him, and He lived in complete submission to the Father. The same pattern is required of anyone who would speak for Him. A person who would exercise spiritual authority must first be under authority. The Roman officer who came to Jesus understood this well when he said he was a man under authority who also had men under him, and that Jesus need only speak a word. He recognized that to rightly use authority you must know what it means to submit to it. When a person claims authority but refuses to be under it, that authority is misused and can become harsh and controlling.

That principle includes civil authority. God has established governing authorities for order and protection, and His word calls us to pray for kings and all who are in authority so that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. The crew of an aircraft and the laws that govern aviation safety carry legitimate authority given for the protection of everyone on board. To continue loudly preaching after repeated requests from the crew to stop is not a quiet and peaceable witness, but a refusal to honor that authority.

Doing the Lord's work does not place anyone above the law. The gospel is advanced not by forcing others to listen in a confined space where they cannot leave, but by speaking the truth in love with respect for others and for the order God has put in place. A faithful witness submits to Christ, and because he submits to Christ he also learns to submit to proper earthly authority.

For that reason I cannot join you in asking God to simply waive the penalty as if ministry exempts someone from consequences. That would not be good for the pastors, for those who were on the flight, or for the testimony of Christ.

Instead we can pray in a way that honors God. We can pray that these pastors will humble themselves before the Lord, acknowledge where they acted unwisely, and grow in understanding of what it means to be under Christ's authority and therefore under the lawful authority He has appointed. We can pray that they will learn to share the good news with greater wisdom, gentleness and respect for others. We can pray for those in authority who must enforce the law, that they will act justly and with mercy. And we can pray for all of us, that we would represent Jesus well, living lives that are submissive to Him and respectful to those around us, so that the gospel may be heard with clarity and grace.
