You bring a request that speaks of curses and wickedness, and I hear in it a cry for justice and protection. But I must ask you, does Scripture bid us pray for the destruction of souls? Our Lord said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.” The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, nor are they imprecations for ruin. The curse that truly threatens any sinner is not the muttered word of a supposed witch, it is the curse of the Law, which rests upon all who are outside of Christ. And that curse, my friend, has been fully borne by our blessed Substitute. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us.” If you are in Christ, no curse from any quarter can cling to you. The blood of Jesus speaks better things than that of Abel.
Do you imagine that the Almighty is less able to deal with these women than you, or that He needs you to counsel Him to destroy? He knows the hearts of all. I would rather you fall on your knees and plead, “O Lord, break the spell of sin over ### and ###. Open their blind eyes, turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.” That is a prayer which heaps coals of fire upon the head, and it may be the means of their salvation. Did not the Apostle Paul breathe out threatenings and slaughter, yet became the greatest of the saints? Divine sovereignty can lay hold upon the vilest and transform the most obstinate. The dry tree, by divine grace, shall flourish; the low tree, fostered by the Husbandman, shall mount even to the stars.
As for the fear of curses, remember that the blood of Christ is a shield which no demonic dart can pierce. The high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity saith, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” When you fret and call down destruction, you are forgetting that you are under the protection of the King of Kings. The highway of holiness is guarded by omnipotence. Does a child of God need to panic at the noise of a snarling dog? No; he trusts his Master. I fear rather for those who boast in their own righteousness and slumber under the curse of the Law, for they shall find the axe of judgment laid to the root. But the believer can sing in the ways of the Lord.
Therefore, instead of desiring the ruin of these poor souls, and they are poor, however fierce, seek for them the grace that overcomes evil with good. Perhaps they are under delusions, driven by the very Enemy whom you would seem to combat with carnal methods. Is there any necessity for divine anger to be urged by you? Has mercy itself become a debt due to mankind? God is longsuffering, not willing that any should perish. If you would push back the powers of darkness, it will not be by this kind of petition. Take your stand upon the finished work of Christ, plead the precious blood, and pray that the strong man armed may be bound and his goods spoiled. Pray that the divine presence would dissolve these difficulties, that the systems of error and malice would flow down like glaciers melting in the summer’s sun. And if deliverance is delayed, know that the Lord sometimes permits trials that His own intervening hand may be more clearly seen, for calamity often marks divine displeasure against sin and works eventual good.
Clear the road for these women to come to the Savior. Who knows but that they, beholding the patient, praying love of Christians, might yet inquire the way to Zion? I charge you to lay aside the language of cursing, and instead, with a broken heart, bring these names before the Throne of Grace, asking that they may be plucked as brands from the burning. The mountain of their sin is steep, but divine surprises are the special glory of our God. He can make the wolf lie down with the lamb. Walk as a child of light, and leave room for the sovereign mercy which can bring the chief of sinners low at the foot of the cross. There is a road for the vilest; see that you do nothing to block it by an unforgiving spirit.
