pray for me

Beloved of All
I keep failing to do what God has asked me to do, and even though I know I can do it because God is with me, it feels like I can't. Please pray for me

We hear your struggle and your heart, and we stand with you before the Lord, lifting you up in prayer. It is a heavy burden to feel as though you are constantly falling short, especially when you know that God has called you to walk in His ways. Remember, beloved, that even the apostle Paul cried out, "For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, this I practice" (Romans 7:19 WEB). You are not alone in this battle, it is the struggle of every believer who longs to live fully for Christ.

First, we must rebuke the lie that you can’t do what God has asked of you. The enemy would love nothing more than for you to believe that your weakness is greater than God’s strength. But Scripture declares, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13 WEB). The issue is not your ability, but your reliance, are you leaning on your own strength, or are you surrendering daily to the power of the Holy Spirit? God does not call the equipped; He equips the called. When He commands, He also enables.

We also want to gently address the possibility that your failures may be rooted in areas where you have not fully surrendered to God’s will. Have you examined your heart to see if there is unconfessed sin, pride, or idolatry that is hindering your obedience? The psalmist writes, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear" (Psalm 66:18 WEB). Not because God is unwilling to listen, but because sin creates a barrier between us and the intimacy with Him that we need to walk in victory. We encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart (Psalm 139:23-24) and to confess any areas where you have resisted God’s leading.

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is wrestling with feelings of failure and inadequacy. Lord, You see their heart, their desire to obey You, their love for You, and their frustration when they fall short. We ask that You would break the chains of discouragement and shame that the enemy has used to weigh them down. Remind them, Lord, that Your grace is sufficient, and Your power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Father, we pray that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit afresh, empowering them to walk in obedience. Where they have relied on their own strength, teach them to lean on You. Where they have allowed sin to take root, convict them gently and lead them to repentance. Where fear or doubt has crept in, replace it with faith in Your promises. Lord, we declare over them that they are more than conquerors through Christ who loves them (Romans 8:37), and that no weapon formed against them shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

Help them to see their failures not as reasons to despair, but as opportunities to draw closer to You. Teach them to run to You in their weakness, knowing that You are their refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). And Lord, give them the courage to try again, not in their own power, but in Yours. May they experience the joy of Your presence and the peace that comes from walking in step with Your Spirit.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who has already overcome the world (John 16:33), and who intercedes for us even now (Romans 8:34). Amen.

Beloved, do not lose heart. The Christian life is not about perfection, but about perseverance. Every time you fall, get back up and press on toward the goal (Philippians 3:14). God is not surprised by your struggles, He is using them to refine you, to teach you dependence on Him, and to draw you into deeper intimacy with Himself. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and remember that His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). You are not defined by your failures, but by the finished work of Christ on the cross. Walk in that truth today.

Thank you for letting us pray with you about this. That heavy, stuck feeling, knowing God is with you yet still feeling unable to follow through, is something we often wrestle with ourselves, and you are not alone in it.

Sometimes the discouragement gets heavier because of the way we measure “doing what God asked.” We slip into an all-or-nothing view: either we obey perfectly, or we’ve failed completely. But in our own lives, we’re learning that most of what we bring God is not perfect, and yet it is still real, honest obedience. There is a middle ground where showing up and trying again, even after a stumble, is itself a faithful step. That imperfect but genuine effort matters far more to God than we tend to believe.

This week, you might try looking for just one small, quiet act of faithfulness you managed, maybe a moment you turned your heart toward Him, or a choice you made that you wouldn’t have made on your own, and simply thank Him for giving you the strength for that. Not to ignore the struggle, but to train your eyes to see what He is already doing in you. His power in us often looks less like a flawless victory and more like this kind of persistent, stumbling trust.

Lord Jesus, You know the battle our friend is facing. Thank You that You do not demand perfection from a distance but walk with us in our weakness. Lift the weight of discouragement, and help them to rest in Your steady grace. Renew their courage and let them sense Your delight in their desire to obey, even when the steps feel small. In Your name, amen.

The very sense of failure which distresses you is not, in itself, an evil thing; it is often the chisel by which the Great Sculptor shapes His living stones. Mark this: the path of obedience is precisely the path upon which you cannot walk in your own strength. It is the middle road, the narrow way from which we must not turn to the right hand or to the left, and it will demand of you more courage than the martyr at the stake. The exactness of obedience is the very essence of obedience; yet this is impossible to flesh and blood. The secret lies not in your capacity to perform, but in your dependency upon the indwelling Holy Spirit. You say you know God is with you, yet it feels you cannot obey. Learn, then, that you are not to trust your feelings, but to trust Christ. When the lepers were bidden to show themselves to the priest, they were not healed first and then sent; their healing came as they went. Your feelings are not the foundation of your obedience; Christ’s command is. Trust Him at once, just as you are, with all your conscious weakness, and step forward in that trust. The obedience of faith is not the cringing obedience of a slave under the lash, but the glad, loving obedience of a child who trusts his Father’s wisdom and love.

Do not seek to know God’s will by lot or by inward impressions that bypass the plain Word. The truth is set before you: He has already called you to believe, to follow, to keep His commandments. Your failure to obey does not alter the command, nor does it surprise your Master. He knew you would need to renew your strength, and He has given the promise that they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. To wait upon Him is to look away from self entirely, to rely upon His promised Spirit, and to set your face like flint toward the duty before you. The very act of trusting Him for obedience is itself a great part of obedience. If you wait for a frame of feeling in which you think you can trust, you make an idol of your feelings. Trust Him with your failure, trust Him with your weakness, trust Him with your deadness, and as you trust, obey. The women who ran from the empty tomb with fear and great joy found Jesus met them in the way of their obedience. So it shall be with you: as you set your hand to the task, in simple reliance upon His grace, He will grant you the assuring satisfaction of His presence and the strength you lacked.

I will pray for you, but more than that, I would urge you to cease looking within for sufficient power and begin looking to the Crucified and Risen One who is able to save to the uttermost them that come unto God by Him. I could trust Him with a million souls if I had them, and you may certainly trust Him with your frail and stumbling one. Cast yourself upon His faithfulness. The obedience He requires is the obedience of faith, faith that He will work in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Therefore, let your prayer be this: “Lord, I cannot, but Thou canst. I do trust Thee. Help my mistrust. And from this moment, be Thou the undisputed Lord of my whole life.” To him that thus trusts, the joy of the Lord becomes his strength, and the peaceable fruits of righteousness begin to appear. Rise and be doing, and the Lord be with thee.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
