You come asking prayer that God would send you a woman to love and to marry, and that He would make it possible in practical ways to know one another. These are earnest desires, and I will not dismiss them, but I must first press upon your soul a deeper question: are you seeking the Lord Himself with your whole heart? For there is a subtle danger in our petitions when we make the gift the object of our pursuit, and forget the Giver. The Lord promises that those who seek Him shall not lack any good thing, and a wife that is indeed a gift from God is a good thing. Yet, if you would have this blessing, see to it that you are among those who honestly, from top to bottom, in heart and soul and spirit, seek first the glory of God. There is a seeking that is merely self dressed in prayerful language, and that will not do. Seek the Lord, and all these things shall be added unto you.
Ponder for a moment the miracle of true love according to the pattern of Christ and His church. The Son of God fixed the eyes of His love upon His chosen, not merely of pity, but of love, a love that gave itself unto death, that He might present to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle. That is the high and holy mystery of marriage. It is no light contract for our convenience, but a lifelong covenant, one man and one woman, indissoluble in the sight of Him who hates putting away. Are you prepared for such a sacred bond? Pray not only for a woman to meet, but for grace to love her as Christ loved the church, in purity, in self-forgetfulness, in enduring faithfulness. If you seek a wife, seek her in the Lord, and see that your own soul is being conformed to the image of Him who is the true Husband of every believing heart.
Remember, too, that the power to work miracles, whether the miracle of conversion or the miracle of bringing two souls together, does not lie in the person asking, but wholly in Jesus Himself. He is the great Miracle Worker, and He knows how to bring His children together in due season. Your prayer for practical ways, for a woman of genuine interest who will not give up, these are details that the Lord who sees all things can most certainly arrange. He knows your path, and He knows every daughter of Eve under the sun. If it is His will, He can make the encounter plain and providential. But I charge you, have faith in God. Not faith in a method, or a chance, or your own efforts, but the faith that God works by His own means. Faith must not be partly in God and partly in something else; it must be faith in God alone. He does not tell you how much; have unlimited faith, daily faith, perpetual, abounding faith in Him. If God be with you, who can be against you? But if you go without God, you will stumble at a straw.
I will pray for you, my friend, as you have asked. I will pray that the Lord, the God of Israel, who knows your longing, will guide you in this matter for His name’s sake. But I pray even more earnestly that the Eternal Spirit may show you the wisdom of seeking God by Jesus Christ, and of seeking Him now. Make certain that your own heart condemns you not, for if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Let your first and greatest pursuit be the smile of your Maker. When that is settled, all else will be well. May the Lord bless you indeed with every spiritual blessing, and if it be for your good and His glory, may He grant you a helpmeet who will walk with you in the fear of the Lord. That shall be a miracle of mercy indeed.
