Pray for me to meet a woman

You ask prayer to meet a woman, and for God to make it possible in practical ways, and for miracles, and that she will not give up on you until you are hers and she is mine. These words reveal a heart that longs for companionship, and marriage is an honorable estate. But consider what you are truly seeking. Do you desire a wife after God’s own heart, or do you desire the comfort of a creature more than the Creator? Many sought Jesus for the loaves and were filled, yet He did not work that miracle continually, to teach them not to be slaves to the belly, but to cling to the things of the Spirit. So too with this request. If you seek marriage merely to satisfy a longing, you may find it, yet your soul remain famished.

You speak of requiring a miracle. But what manner of miracle did David work when he was young, that God should call him a man after His own heart? None! It was not wonders that made him admirable, but a life that shone. John the Baptist did no miracle at all, yet he fixed the attention of multitudes. His boldness for God, his voluntary poverty, his whole manner of living, these were his sign. The care of practice and love of virtue are far greater than signs, for miracles, unless we are sober, often do harm, puffing us up with pride. Do not seek a sign as the foundation of your hope. Seek instead to become a man of such virtue that a godly woman would see the work of God in you.

Your prayer asks that a woman will not give up on you until you are hers and she is yours. This is the language of a demanding love, but true love, as Scripture models, is patient and does not insist on its own way. Think on the Bridegroom Himself. Our nature, contemptible and poor, did not ascend to Him. He came to us, and suffered for us, and having taken our nature, He transported it to His Father’s house. That is the pattern of love you must learn: a love that stoops, that serves, that endures, not one that demands a relentless pursuit until possession is secured.

So I do pray, but I pray not merely that you meet a woman. I pray that you become a man who is not driven by the anxiety of this request. I pray that you cultivate a life of such sobriety, prayer, and good works that you attend upon the Lord without distraction. In that leisure of soul, you may find that marriage is a help, but not an idol. For marriage is not an impure state, but it is one of much occupation. If you seek a wife, seek her for a holy end: that together you might be heirs of the grace of life. And if God in His wisdom delays, then learn from the widow indeed: she who is left desolate trusts in God and continues in supplications night and day. Her hope is not in a future spouse, but in the God who raises the dead. God bless you with that hope which does not disappoint.
