For a closer walk with God, u need to spend more time reading His Word and commune with the Holy Spirit. With our own efforts, we can never achieve anything. Only the Holy Spirit can help us :

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

Our hearts become pure when we 'kill ' our flesh and become more like Lord JESUS. 

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
