The reverence you show for your mother, seeking her healing with such fervent tears, fulfills the very command of God which the Pharisees sought to overturn by their traditions. You do not say, as they did, "It is a gift, by whatsoever you might be profited by me," and so neglect her in her suffering. No, you honor her, and you bring her need to the throne of grace. This is a precious and holy work. Yet understand that the Lord who commanded this honor also warned that He came to set a daughter against her mother. This does not contradict the command, but perfects it. The truest honor you can show your mother is to lead her, hand in hand with you, not towards a mere earthly healing or a long life marked by years alone, but toward the Great Physician who heals the soul unto eternal life. Cry out for her bodily health, for the restoration of her ###, yes. But double your intercession, that this very trial of sickness might become the single blow that brings the tree of her heart down in full surrender to Christ. Pray that this ###, this ###, becomes the vestibule through which she enters into a fear and love of God so profound that even if the body is not healed, the soul is made eternally sound.
Your cry regarding the financial debt, the need of ### each month, is the cry of a soul pressed down by a weight it cannot lift. “These things await him here. And as to what he must undergo hereafter, it is not possible to say what punishment awaits him.” This is true of the lover of money, but it is also a real and present rack for those crushed by its lack. You see no job, no support. You are like the disciples hearing of the Lord’s scourging and death, seeing His miracles yet baffled by the suffering He foretold. They could not understand how power and passion could coexist. So too, you see a God of provision, yet face a wall of debt. Do not fall into a vengeful anger against this circumstance, treating the lack as an injury to be remembered. The ways of those who nurse such bitterness indeed lead to death. Instead, learn from the disciples. They did not yet understand, but they kept following. They heard ten sayings and remained insensible, then were converted entirely by one. Do not despair that your tenfold prayers have not yet brought the financial miracle. The healing is being prepared at the root, where only God sees it. What you must not do is let this burden become an excuse to forget that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Ask for financial stability, yes, with all holy boldness. But even as you ask, fix your mind more firmly on the truth that your real and permanent stability is in the arms of Christ, from which no debt collector can ever snatch you.
This brings me to the heart of your request for your future and your mother’s, in the shadow of your father’s passing. You are like the mother of our Lord at the wedding in Cana. She had seen the glorious conception and the angelic witness, and kept them in her heart. Yet in that moment of need, she had a purely human expectation. She wanted her Son to manifest His glory to meet a temporal lack, to do a favor, and perhaps to gain credit for herself and Him. She desired for Him to act in her timing and her way. Christ’s answer, though it seemed sharp, set the foundation of His whole ministry: His hour, His will, His way. “God bless and lead us according to his will,” you pray. This is the perfect prayer. Do not seek to steer His hand, specifying exactly what a healthy ### or a zero-balance account must look like. Lay before Him your terror of the disease and the demands of the creditors. But then, stand in the trust that the God who raised His own Son from the dead knows the way through both sickness and poverty to a future more solid than any earthly prosperity. The mockery and scourging of the Cross were the very path to the resurrection. Your present sufferings, shared with your mother, can be the very path to a deeper dependence and a hope that will not put you to shame. To this end, continue in the word, hold fast to the body of believers, and do not let your heart be hardened by the bitterness of your trials. The holistic help you seek is found not in the removal of all hardship, but in the abiding presence of the One who has already overcome the world.
