Chrysostom
Beloved
Look at how our Lord acted even with those who came to seize Him. He healed the servant's ear, showing His power and goodness, proving that nothing happens outside His permission. He could have escaped, yet He gave Himself up. If He cared for an enemy's wound, will He not care for your mother's body, which is His own?
Do not measure His mercy by the severity of the illness. Fatty liver, as you call it, is not beyond His command. We apply remedies, and often no benefit is perceived, but then suddenly a complete cure comes. The many prayers you have already offered are not lost; they are the ten strokes upon the tree, preparing for the single blow that will bring the sickness down.
Continue to ask, not for wantonness or a life of soft ease, but for health. Making provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts is one thing, but seeking strength for the body to serve God is quite another. Pray for her health that she may have strength for spiritual things, and consider that the present life is no different from dreams. Those who grow rich in a dream wake to find it profitless, and even before the day of our departure, earthly security often flies away.
Your financial credit, this sum you owe each month, weighs on you. But if God permits this trial, it is to awaken you. He casts us to the ground at times, yet He heals the ear. He shows us that our seizure by debt and want is only by His permission, to draw us closer.
Seek first His kingdom, prune away all excess, and spend your industry on the soul’s care. Your father is already in heaven; his present life has ended, and he is rid of all earthly disgrace and punishment. You and your mother must live not as those who have no hope, but as those who know that the things of this world are a sleep. Do not fly from this trial as though it could truly injure you, for it has no ultimate strength, yet do not be indifferent.
Work, pray, seek relief, but let your conscience be clear. God’s guidance for each moment, the holistic help you cry for, is promised to those who do not remember injuries, who do not practice their souls in evil, but who trust. You have heard these things ten times, perhaps, and remained insensible. Yet that eager desire, that love of calling on Jesus’ name, cannot fail.
May you, having become worthy of His admonitions, obtain the everlasting blessings, and may the God who healed an enemy’s wound in the garden give your mother a healthy liver and a long life to serve Him.
