A sick brother held within the walls of a prison, and sickness gnawing at his frame, here is a double bond to be loosed by the power of prayer. The Lord permits these afflictions to drive a man to his wit's end, where his own sense fails, and then his cry has a peculiar power before the throne. A true prayer from one brought near the gates of the grave, even staggered in mind, reels not away from the ear of the Almighty, but enters into His heart. Therefore, be not silent, but pour out your soul with definite, humble, and argumentative supplication. Lay the case before Him: name your brother, plead his sickness, his confinement, his great need of pardoning grace. Imitate the patriarch who cried, "Deliver me, I pray You, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau," and be as direct in your request for this prisoner of sorrow.
Healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction. The word to the palsied man rings down the ages: "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you." Often bodily sickness is the shadow of sin, a chastening from the Father's hand, and when the iniquity is removed, the inhabitant shall not say, "I am sick." Yet the leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, even the least thing about Christ has virtue to cure the sin-sick soul and its attendant maladies. There is no stint in His power. Though your brother were full of leprosy, the Savior is full of grace. Seek for him not only a physician for the body, but first and foremost the Good Physician who speaks pardon to the heart. Cry, "Lord, forgive! Lord, heal!" The one command shall do both works.
But see that your own prayer be not hindered. Search your heart for any sin harbored, for iniquity blocks the conduit of blessing. Be not as those who merely look on and critique, but cast yourself down as a sick one before the Healer. Pray with a directness that shames all vague beating about the bush, state the need exactly and believe that God hears. And do not grow weary; though the answer tarry, prayer, mighty prayer, will yet prevail if it has but time. We, the church, will join our supplications with yours in one accord, for the healing power is present where Christ is lifted up and His people unite in fervent, expectant intercession. Bring your brother to Jesus: though he cannot come himself, faith can pierce walls and lay him low before the mercy seat. The hand that was nailed for sinners can break chains of iron and disease. Only believe. God bless you and grant the double deliverance for which we ask.
