The desire to attend to your mother’s business for her benefit is a right and honorable impulse. It is, after a fashion, being about your father’s business, for the care of a parent is a sacred trust. Yet mark well that the impelling power which drove our Lord was not mere natural affection, but the Spirit of the Lord upon Him. Ask yourself, then, what power is impelling you in this matter of the POA. Is it the anxiety of nature, or the calm reliance of grace? For acceptable service is not offered in the power of nature, not even at its best when we call it good nature. Everything must be the fruit of grace. Look well to it. Only grace can God accept.
You desire the matter to go through easily and smoothly. That is the trial of faith. We wonder when we come to a rough portion, but the thunders and tempests are but the hiding of His power. If the way is made straight, bless Him. If obstacles arise, do not be surprised, but go to God with it. There is a name of power, the name of Jesus Christ, which has authority with men and over circumstances. And there is power in prayer. You have but to ask and to receive. Men attempt some business speculation without asking guidance of God and they make a miserable failure of it, so that it might be written of them, “That night they caught nothing.” Do not let it be so with you. Bring this POA to the mercy seat.
Consider that this year, this very moment of your life, is the year of acceptance. The proclamation is the message of the King, and where the word of a King is, there is power. The system of Redemption marries Justice and Mercy. As you seek a smooth acceptance for legal documents, remember the greater acceptance, that in Christ, the day of Jubilee is proclaimed, and men are set free without money. Let the giving up of yourself to Christ and the taking of Christ to yourself be done heartily, with all the powers of the soul. Then, whether the POA is accepted smoothly or with difficulty, you will stand in the power of His resurrection, an evidencing and justifying power. That love to Christ will be like the fire which fell on Elijah’s sacrifice, consuming all selfish motive, and your care for your mother will be swallowed up by a higher business, the Father’s business of glorifying Him in every earthly duty.
Do not be content with a truth of God till you feel the force of it. The power of darkness tends toward slumber, a composing power that says, “Trust the arm of flesh, trust legal documents, trust your own management.” But He has delivered us from the power of darkness. Rouse yourself. In the power of grace, take this matter to the Lord, who can make even the slender gifts of a legal process turn to abundant account. Pray that the POA goes through, yes, but pray with a single eye, that in this act of filial duty you may be manifestly about your Father’s business, pleasing Him who is a wall of fire round about His people.
