We join you in thanking the Lord for blessing your son to be placed in the grade where he belongs and we lift him up together before the Father in Jesus' name.

We understand his sadness in leaving a beloved teacher, it is natural for a child to form a strong attachment to one who has cared for him and taught him well. We pray that God will comfort his heart and help him to see that the Lord orders his steps for his good. As it is written, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 We ask God to give him that peace as he transitions, to give him favor with his new teachers and to help him quickly love and respect them, and for his teachers to see his outstanding abilities and to nurture him with wisdom and kindness. We also pray God will grant him wisdom as it is written, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

We also want to lovingly address what you shared about his behavior at home. It is a blessing that he is an outstanding student and well mannered around other adults, and we thank God for that testimony. Yet we must gently rebuke the behavior of being ugly to you and his mother, because Scripture calls this dishonor and disobedience. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Ephesians 6:1-3 and also Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord. Colossians 3:20 When a child is respectful outside the home but disrespectful inside, it often reveals where he feels most secure to test boundaries, but it is still sin that needs correction in love. God has placed you as his parents to train and guide him, as it is written Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

We encourage you to continue to correct him consistently with love, patience and prayer, not in anger but in firm and gracious discipline, teaching him that honoring his father and mother is honoring God. Talk with him about his feelings regarding the change in teachers, help him name his sadness and bring it to Jesus, and also clearly teach him that unkind words or attitudes toward his parents do not please the Lord and will be corrected. Let him see your own love for each other and for the Lord, and cover him daily in prayer.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You for this young son and for opening the door for him to be in the grade where he belongs. We thank You for his mind, his manners, and the gift he is to his family. Lord, we ask You to comfort his heart in this transition, heal any sadness over leaving his former teacher, and help him to embrace his new teachers with respect, joy and an eager heart to learn. Give those teachers wisdom and love for him. Father, we ask You to soften his heart toward his parents, convict him when he speaks or acts ugly toward them, and teach him to honor and obey his father and mother as Your Word commands. Give his parents wisdom, patience, unity and strength to train him in Your ways without growing weary. Let Your peace guard his heart and let his home be filled with love, respect and godliness. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus, through whom we have access to Your throne, amen.

Thank you for sharing your son with us. We hear both the joy and the worry in your request, thankfulness that the Lord opened the door for him to be in the grade where he belongs, and concern for his tender heart as he misses a teacher he loved, and for how he speaks to you and his mother at home.

It is very common for a child who is outstanding and well mannered with other adults to be hardest on his parents. Home is where he feels safest to let out big feelings, even while he is still learning how to handle them well. His sadness about leaving his last teacher makes sense too. A good teacher leaves a real mark, and moving forward can feel like a loss even when the new place is right for him.

A couple of gentle steps that may help:

We can honor what was good while helping him look forward. Writing a short thank you note together to his former teacher and praying for her can give his sadness a healthy place to go. And helping him get to know his new teachers by name, perhaps with a brief hello together before or after school and a simple prayer together for the day ahead, can ease that transition.

At home, when things are calm, not in the moment he is speaking harshly, letting him know clearly and warmly what respectful speech sounds like in your family, and then following through with the same calm consistency each time, teaches security and respect over time.

Father, we lift this young man to You and thank You for his life. Comfort his heart as he adjusts, help him to feel at home with his new teachers, and give his parents wisdom and patience as they guide him with love. Grow respect and kindness in his words at home. In Jesus' name, amen.

We join you in bringing your son before the throne of grace and we will pray with you for him.

We thank God with you that the Lord has blessed him to be placed in the grade where he belongs and that he is an outstanding student, well mannered among other adults. This is a mercy from the Lord, and we pray that he will see it as such. We also hear your burden that he is sad to leave a teacher he loved, and that at home he is sometimes unkind to you and to his mother though he shows respect elsewhere.

We will pray that God will comfort his heart in this change and help him to love and to honor his new teachers. May the Lord give him a teachable spirit and may his teachers show him kindness and wisdom, so that he may settle with joy and continue to use diligently the gifts God has given him.

We will pray also for that which lies nearest to your concern at home. The Scripture teaches us that obedience should begin at home, and it will find its hands full enough there. True obedience is not the obedience of a slave but the obedience of a child, the obedience of love and not of terror, the obedience of faith. We will ask the Lord to work in your son by His Holy Spirit, who alone can recreate the heart and set up a new throne within the soul where a new King shall reign. Wherever there is an intelligent creature, even a child, the Gospel is to be preached, and we pray that your son may early learn to lay his soul and all its sins at the dear feet of Jesus and trust in Him to save him. For only He who makes all things can make all things new, and the new birth is as great a wonder as creation itself.

We will pray that he may learn that the exactness of obedience is the very essence of obedience, and that to honor father and mother is the first commandment with promise. Pray with us that he may be sincere in seeking to know the Lord's will and to do it, not only when others are watching but most of all within his own home, where love should make obedience a joy. May he come to see that a tender conscience toward his parents is a beautiful part of following Christ.

We pray also for you and his mother, that God will give you patience, wisdom and grace to train him in God's fear, to tie the teachings of the Word about his neck and to keep them before him, and to show him in your own lives what it is to walk in faith and love toward the Savior. May the Lord help you to instruct him gently and consistently, and to point him always to Jesus, who is awake at all hours and ready to receive all who come to Him.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, we thank You for this child whom You have made and for the place You have given him in his school. Comfort him in his sadness and give him favor with his teachers and joy in his learning. Work in his heart by Your Spirit, give him a new heart and a right spirit, and teach him to love You and to obey You, beginning at home by honoring his father and mother with kindness and respect. Help his parents to lead him with wisdom and love, and bring him to trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We ask this in the name of Jesus our only Savior, Amen.
