Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing your heart about your son. It is a blessing to hear that the Lord has allowed him to move forward into the grade where he belongs and that he is doing so well in his studies and shows such good manners with others. It is also understandable that he feels sad about leaving a teacher he loved. That kind of attachment shows a tender heart, and it is natural to grieve a good relationship even while stepping into something new.
I will pray that God comforts him in this transition and helps him to feel at home with his new teachers. Scripture tells us that even as a child Jesus grew strong in spirit and was filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him, and that his parents faithfully guided him. My prayer for your son is the same, that he would continue to grow in wisdom and grace, that God would give him favor with his new teachers and a joyful heart for learning in this new year, and that the sadness over what he left behind would be replaced with confidence that God has placed him where he should be.
You also mentioned the struggle at home, that he can be respectful and well mannered with other adults yet speak harshly to you and his mother at times. Thank you for being honest about this, because many families face this same pattern. The Bible puts great importance on the family order. Children are called to obey their parents in the Lord for this is right, and to honor their father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise that it may be well with them and their days may be long. When that honoring breaks down in the home, the whole foundation of the family feels it. At the same time Scripture also speaks to parents not to provoke their children to anger or frustrate them by pressing them beyond what they are able to bear. Sometimes a child acts out at home precisely because home is where he feels safest, but he still needs gentle, consistent guidance.
Pray for both sides of this. Pray that God softens your son's heart to see that honoring you and his mother is not just about manners but about obedience to God, and that he would learn to show the same kindness at home that he shows outside. And pray that God gives you and his mother wisdom, patience and grace to correct him in love without provoking him, to set clear and loving boundaries, and to nurture his simple trust in God rather than wearing it down. The Lord cares deeply about a child's faith and calls us to protect and nourish it.
Let us pray together. Father, thank you for this young boy you have made and for the gift of this new school year. Comfort his heart over the teacher he misses and help him to build good and trusting relationships with his new teachers. Fill him with wisdom and let your grace be upon him as he grows. Work in his heart to honor his father and mother, to speak with kindness and respect at home, and help his parents to lead him with patience, understanding and loving discipline. Draw this whole family closer to Jesus and to one another. In Jesus name, amen.
