Comfort ye, comfort ye, you with the tearful eye and the aching heart. There is forgiveness. Let this whisper drive away despair! What a blessed whisper it is! There is forgiveness. There is forgiveness. Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. There was forgiveness, there is forgiveness, there will be forgiveness as long as life lasts. It is a surprising forgiveness, for God Himself seems astonished that such sins should be remitted, and so He repeats it lest any should doubt. I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. If you have been the chief of sinners, you may have the chief of sinners' forgiveness, and God can bestow it now.
This cleansing is a divine work. I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. Trust Him to do it, for it is His work to save His people from their sins. The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanseth from all sin everyone that believeth in Him. That cleansing is total and complete, for if it left but one sin in the sight of God, it would have no power to save the trembling conscience. You ask for health without illness, supply for all needs, help with every difficulty, forgiveness of debts, and a clean heart and body. Yet consider the servant who owed ten thousand talents. He sought only a delay, a little more time, yet the master, moved with compassion, forgave the entire debt. He gave more than was asked. Do you see the surpassing benevolence? You pray for these earthly things, and He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all you ask or think. But do not seek from Him only the partial health that ends with this body. The true comfort, the eternal comfort, is given through grace, stablishing your heart in every good work and word. The rich man in Hades had his fill of earthly supply, yet he was so poor he could not command a drop of water. Why then gape after the wealth of merely a healthy body, which cannot bring us into Heaven?
When Moses spoke of circumcision, it was a partial health, for the uncircumcised soul was to be destroyed. But Christ speaks of making a whole man healthy. What is this wholeness? It is the purity of conscience that testifies you are not suffering for evil-doing, but for what is pleasing to God. This good work of a pure conscience becomes our comfort, our crown, our glory. For if your mind is shaken by every illness and difficulty, your soul becomes like paralyzed hands. But if you are stablished, not turned aside, you will bear all things with longsuffering. Be afflicted? It works for your salvation, in the patient enduring of the same sufferings the saints also suffer.
You ask Him to make your heart and body clean. This is a good petition. But know that the comfort He gives is not a life without tribulation. It is an eternal comfort and good hope through grace. He loved us and gave us this comfort. To be stablished in that hope, to do something good and pleasing to God, this is the refreshment far more abundant than a drop of water. For if blessedness is pronounced where iniquities are forgiven and sins covered, there all shame is removed and there is much glory. Seek then that wealth which consists in good works. Flee that poverty which causes men to be in wickedness. Let not the Devil, through this care for the body, set nature in a flame of anxiety. But let God prove the golden soul of the righteous man, that having a conscience pure and without guile, you may behave yourself everywhere in the world, not trusting in your own request for a delay from suffering, but in His power to forgive the entire debt, making your comfort abound for the encouragement of others.

Notice how all these needs find their answer not in our own striving, but in the finished work of Jesus Christ. The work of redemption is complete. On the cross, He declared it finished. There is nothing you can do to earn your salvation or make yourself right before God. Every debt of sin you ever owed, a debt you could never pay, was fully forgiven the moment you turned to Him. Rest in that. Cease from your own efforts to be acceptable, and enter into the rest He has already provided.
This resting, however, is not passive. The enemy will challenge you constantly, whispering that you cannot live this life of purity and health. He wants you to trust in your own works and your own energy for the day. But the word of God discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The real battle is about where you place your trust: in your own ability to be healthy and righteous, or in His completed work within you. As you believe and trust in Him, He works in you both the desire and the capacity to do what pleases Him. Your spiritual health is far more significant than your physical health, and a heart at rest in God's grace is a healthy heart indeed. A merry heart does good, like a medicine. When your heart is filled with the joy of what Christ has done, it affects your whole being.
When it comes to your work and your needs, consider the principle of the willing heart. God stirs a person's spirit, giving them the yearning and the wisdom for the task at hand. Anything we do for God that is not a joyful response to His love is just empty labor. We cannot work to gain His favor; we work because we already have His favor. And when it comes to giving and provision, the same holds true. The Lord loves a cheerful giver, one who purposes in their heart, not under compulsion. When you give your life, your trust, and your resources to Him from a willing, stirred heart, He promises that His grace will abound toward you, giving you all sufficiency in all things.
Forgiveness is also a matter of the heart. God has forgiven you an unpayable debt. Now, the Spirit gives you the capacity to forgive from your heart any offense you hold. It is not a work you do to earn His forgiveness, but a response to the massive forgiveness you have already received.
