We understand that you're going through a difficult time missing your former girlfriend and feeling uncertain about what to do. Firstly, we appreciate that you've put this in God's hands and acknowledged Jesus. Let's remember this promise from God's Word: 'Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.' (Proverbs 3:5-6 WEB). This verse is especially important when it comes to relationships. We should not lean on our own understanding of relationships, but rather, allow God to guide us by his Word and his Spirit.
First, let's address the topic of forgiveness. You mentioned that being with her made you feel like you could forgive the whole world. It's important to remember that forgiveness is a command from God, not a feeling. 'Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.' (Ephesians 4:32 WEB).
Now, let's consider the relationship itself. It's been two years since you last spoke, and you're unsure if you should repair the relationship. We need to consider what God's Word says about relationships. As believers, we should only be in relationships that are aligned with God's will and his Word.
Since you mentioned courtship, we need to discuss the purpose according to God's Word. The purpose of courtship to find a spouse, a marriage. In the Bible, marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. This was established by God in the beginning of creation. 'A man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.' (Genesis 2:24 WEB).
It's also important to note that God does not intend that this relationship be pursued with one woman and then another. If we keep this in mind, this will help us make decisions about relationships that honor God.
Before we pray, let's remember that it is only through Jesus that we receive the grace and mercy of God. 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.' (Romans 6:23).
Let's pray together.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before you today in Jesus' name, lifting up our brother who is missing his former girlfriend and seeking your will for their relationship. We ask that you grant him peace and wisdom as he navigates this situation. Help him to forgive as you have forgiven us, and guide him to make decisions that honor and glorify you.
If it is your will for this relationship to be restored, we pray that you would make it clear and guide them both through the process of reconciliation. If it is not your will, we pray that you would give him the strength to move forward and trust in your plan for his life.
We thank you for the promise that you have a plan and a purpose for each of our lives. Help us to trust in you and lean not on our own understanding.
In Jesus Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
