Please pray for my ###’s soul

We join you in remembering your mother as tomorrow marks one year since the Lord called her home after her battle with cancer, and we lift you up together before our heavenly Father in this tender time of grief. Our hearts ache with you, and we ask God to surround you with His peace and comfort as you remember her life and mourn her absence.

We want to lovingly share what Scripture teaches about praying for those who have passed, so that our prayers align with God's will. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 9:27 that it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment, and in 2 Corinthians 5:8 that to be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord for those who are in Christ. This means that a person's eternal destiny is settled in this life through faith in Jesus, and we cannot change that standing after death through our prayers. If your mother put her trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we can rejoice that she is present with Him, for Jesus said in John 11:25, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. If we are unsure of her faith, we entrust her soul to the perfect mercy, justice, and love of God, who alone knows the heart and judges righteously.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to God and the hope of eternal life. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. There is no other name by which we can be saved, and Scripture promises in Romans 10:9 that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We encourage you to be certain of your own hope in Christ, so that you may have the assurance of being reunited with loved ones who die in Him, as we are told in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 that God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up this dear child who is grieving the loss of a beloved mother. We ask You to be near as You have promised in Psalm 34:18 that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Heal the brokenhearted as You promise in Psalm 147:3, and comfort this grieving heart with Your presence. Pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding and remind our friend that You are the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Help them to cast every care on You, to find strength in Your Word, and to cling to the blessed hope that in Your presence You will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes in Revelation 21:4, where death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain. If there is any doubt or sorrow that lingers, draw them closer to Jesus, deepen their faith, and let tomorrow be a day not only of tears but of thanksgiving for the life that was given and for Your eternal promises. We entrust your mother's soul into Your righteous hands, and we ask for Your healing and sustaining grace for the family left behind. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We are keeping you close in prayer as tomorrow, October 8th, approaches. A year since losing your mother to cancer is a tender marker, and it makes sense that this week feels heavy again even if recent months have been steadier.

Anniversaries often bring a fresh wave of grief. In the days leading up you may find yourself replaying memories, feeling on edge, or carrying a quiet dread you did not expect. That is a common part of how we grieve, not a step backward. Be gentle with yourself if tears come quickly or if you need quiet. There is no single right way to get through the day, and others may not fully understand how deep it still feels.

If it helps, consider deciding tonight how you want to walk through tomorrow so you are not caught without support. You might set aside unhurried time to remember her in a way that fits you, looking through a few photos, visiting her resting place or a quiet place you love, and letting one trusted person know your plans so you are not carrying the day alone. A simple, intentional act of remembrance can give the grief somewhere to go.

We are grateful you reached out and we will continue to remember you before the Lord.

Father, we lift this dear child to You and entrust their mother to Your mercy and care. Comfort this heart tomorrow and in the days to come, surround them with Your nearness and with people who love them, and give them rest as they remember with love. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is a tender sorrow that returns with the turning of the year, and to remember a mother a year after her departure through so painful a disease as cancer is indeed to feel the sentence of death written upon our own hearts. Death has come into your house and taken away one most dear, and it is right that you should mourn, for such mourning is not the sorrow of the world which works death, but a grief which may be made sweet and sanctified when it looks to Christ.

We must speak plainly and lovingly concerning that for which you ask. The Scripture teaches that death came by sin and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned, and it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this the judgment. While there is life there is hope, for Christ died for sin upon the tree that sinners might die to sin and live unto righteousness, and by His stripes we are healed. His death was not a mere suffering but a suffering unto death, that He might put sin away forever for all who trust in Him. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and it must be laid hold of by faith in this life. For this reason we cannot pray that a soul departed should now be made otherwise than as God, who is both just and merciful, has ordained according to His perfect knowledge of faith in Christ. The state of the soul is fixed at death, and no prayer of ours can alter that divine sentence.

What we can and do most earnestly do is pray for you who remain and mourn. And in that prayer we ask the Lord to give you what Isaiah calls the oil of joy for mourning. The Lord does not despise the tears of His children, but He has provided beauty for ashes and joy to take away the mourning which lies beneath them. The throne of grace is accessible, and there burdens are made light and crosses are made to bud with crowns.

We will pray that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of grace and supplication, will comfort you tomorrow and in the days to come, that you may look not only upon your loss but upon the cross where Christ bore our sins in His own body. If your mother trusted in the Lord Jesus, then her hope was not in vain, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and that blessed hope remains sure. If you have not yet a settled assurance concerning her faith, then let this anniversary drive you to the greater question of your own soul, that you may be found clothed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is a fit robe for life and for death and for eternity.

May the Lord show you His loving kindness in the morning of this anniversary and His faithfulness every night. May He turn your mourning into a mourning for Christ, which is a delicious grief full of rare excellencies, and in that mourning may you find the healing that comes only through His blood. We commend you to His tender care, praying that He who brings us to death will also bring us through death to life everlasting by faith in His Son.

We are praying for you, that you may know His peace which passes all understanding, and that your grief may be tempered with hope in the Redeemer who has conquered the grave.
