indigoflower, my friend, I stand with you in agreement before God and I will commit to praying for these things. Of course I won't pretend that I fully understand your situation, but I can say that I was in a similar position just a few months ago. I have a friend who was actively suicidal, even from before I started talking to him. He was certain that he would do it -- he had a plan, date, everything. However, I prayed earnestly and God gave me peace about the situation. I hope you will find that same peace. God gave me the ability show him love while being patient and understanding. Suddenly, when the date came, he decided not to do it. After that, he said he no longer had the desire. I do believe that it is by the grace of God that this happened. Like your friend, however, he still does not have a definite sense of purpose. He's still holding onto a lot of things that have been hurtful in his life and he does not know God, so it will be a long process before everything is completely fine.
I just want to encourage you to keep trusting in God. No matter what happens to your friend, please do not lose heart. I will pray that your friend would soon be able to find the same hope that we have in Christ with God's help. I know this must be difficult for both you and him.
