Your distress is real, and the weakness of the body weighs heavily upon you. This very sickness, which holds your household in its grip, is permitted not to crush your spirit but to remind us all of our common frailty. Even the Apostle Paul’s own son in the faith, Timothy, suffered from frequent infirmities of the stomach, and Paul did not simply command a miraculous healing. Instead, he offered practical counsel for the body’s relief. When the body is brought low, it is no shame to seek what may bring it strength, using the means that God has provided for health. Turn your hearts to the Great Physician, for He who fashioned the body knows its every ache. Yet in the misery of the queasy stomach and the failing frame, there is a hidden mercy, a visitation that curbs the pride of life and teaches us to set our hope not on the fleeting comfort of the body but on the unshakeable kingdom.
Do not let this trial fill you with despair or cause you to think the Lord is far off. He came not to judge but to save, and He knows your frame, that you are dust. The discomfort that makes even a sip of water a burden is not a sign of His abandonment, but an occasion to cast yourselves wholly upon His compassion. For the weakness of the flesh is the proving ground of faith. Pray earnestly, and as you are able, do the simple things that care for the body. Your weak stomachs can bear but little; take that little for the sake of mending, not for luxury. Lift up this whole affliction to Christ, who bore our infirmities, and seek first the food of the soul, which never perishes. The spiritual feast of His presence and His word strengthens the inner man even when the outer man is wasting away. The teaching that comes from heaven has no set hour and is the very medicine of the soul.
I join my prayer to yours, that the Lord Jesus Christ would stretch forth His hand and touch you both, from the crown of your heads to the soles of your feet, rebuking this sickness and restoring your stomachs to perfect soundness. I pray too for your children, that this scourge would halt at the threshold of their rooms and not enter in. May the peace of God, which makes all pain bearable, settle upon your home, and may this trial, when it has passed, leave behind a harvest of endurance and a clearer vision of His sustaining grace.
