Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this painful burden and for caring enough to bring your brother and his wife before the Lord. It is right to pray for this marriage, and it is also important to pray in a way that honors what God says about marriage.
Scripture teaches that in marriage two people become one flesh. It is not just a partnership or a contract, but a deep unity where two become one. The same word used for one in that union is used to describe the oneness of God Himself, a compound unity. God designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and sexual faithfulness belongs only within that covenant. When that oneness is broken by unfaithfulness, the wound goes very deep for everyone involved.
An affair may seem in the moment to offer something desirable, but it brings disaster and lasting harm. Sin of this kind does not stay contained. It haunts a person, damages trust, and can leave consequences that linger long after the choice is made. That is why prayer for this situation cannot simply be that things quickly go back to how they were while the unfaithfulness continues. What is needed first is truth and repentance.
The Bible shows that Jesus welcomed sinners and ate with them, but the mark that His grace had truly been received was a changed life. Repentance means a turning away from sin, a change of direction, and a desire for restoration with God and with others. Forgiveness is freely offered through Jesus Christ alone, and when it is received it leads to a break with the sin that caused the hurt.
So I am praying for your brother that God would bring conviction, that he would see the seriousness of what he is doing, that he would end the affair completely, turn to Jesus for forgiveness, and take honest steps of repentance. That includes confessing to God and to his wife, seeking wise and accountable counsel, and doing the hard work of rebuilding trust over time. I am praying for his wife for comfort, strength, wisdom and protection in this time of betrayal and grief, and that she would be surrounded by godly support and counsel as she discerns next steps. And I am praying for the marriage itself, that if there is to be healing, it would come through truth, repentance and the grace of God, not through pretending that nothing happened.
A prayer we can pray together is this: Father, have mercy on this family. Bring what is hidden into the light, bring conviction where there is sin, and bring comfort where there is pain. Lead this man to repentance and to faith in Jesus Christ, that he may be forgiven and transformed. Heal the hurt that has been caused, give wisdom to both husband and wife, and work in their hearts according to Your will for marriage. Give them courage to walk in truth and to seek help from Your Word and from faithful counsel. In Jesus name, amen.
If possible, encourage both of them to seek personal help from a trusted pastor or biblical counselor who can walk with them individually and together. Continue to lift them up, not only for restored feelings, but for true repentance, healing and a future built on faithfulness to Christ.
