We hear the longing in your heart, dear brother or sister, and we join you in bringing this matter before the Lord with sincerity and faith. Your desire for a godly spouse is a good and holy desire, for Scripture tells us, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from Yahweh" (Proverbs 18:22 WEB). Yet we must remember that God’s timing is perfect, and His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Waiting is not easy, but it is often in the waiting that God prepares our hearts, refines our faith, and aligns us with His will.
We must also gently remind you, and ourselves, that our hope must be firmly rooted in Christ alone. While it is natural to long for companionship, we must guard our hearts against idolatry, where the desire for a spouse becomes greater than our devotion to God. Jesus warned, "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" (Mark 8:36 WEB). Let your trust in God’s plan be unwavering, even if the answer is not what you currently hope for.
We also encourage you to examine your heart in this season. Are you seeking a spouse for godly reasons, to honor the Lord in marriage, to serve alongside another believer, and to raise up a family that loves and fears God? Or has loneliness or cultural pressure influenced this desire? The Bible calls us to marry "only in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 7:39 WEB), meaning we must pursue a spouse who shares our faith and commitment to Christ. Marriage is a sacred covenant, not merely a relationship of convenience or emotion.
If you have not already, we urge you to surrender this longing fully to the Lord. Lay it at His feet daily, trusting that He knows what is best for you. Psalm 37:4-5 (WEB) says, "Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this." Notice that delighting in the Lord comes first, our desires must align with His will before He fulfills them.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble and trusting hearts, lifting up our dear brother/sister who longs for a godly spouse. Lord, You know the deepest desires of their heart, and we ask that You would either fulfill this longing according to Your perfect will or replace it with a deeper contentment in You alone. Help them to wait patiently, trusting in Your timing and Your goodness. Guard their heart from discouragement, impatience, or sinful compromise, and fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding.
Father, if it is Your will for them to marry, prepare them now to be a godly husband or wife. Teach them to love as Christ loves the church, to lead with humility, or to submit with grace. Surround them with wise, godly counsel and bring the right person into their life at the right time. If it is Your will for them to remain single, help them to embrace that calling with joy, using their singleness to serve You wholeheartedly, as Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 7.
Lord, we also ask that You would reveal any areas in their heart that need Your healing or correction. If there has been past sin, whether in thought, word, or deed, we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing. Help them to walk in purity, honoring You in all their relationships. May they seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that all these things will be added unto them (Matthew 6:33).
Above all, draw them closer to You, Jesus. Let them find their ultimate satisfaction in You, their Bridegroom. May they say with the psalmist, "Whom have I in heaven but you? There is nothing on earth that I desire besides you" (Psalm 73:25 WEB). Strengthen their faith, deepen their prayer life, and fill them with hope as they wait on You.
We ask all these things in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, the One who holds our future in His hands. Amen.
In this season of waiting, we encourage you to stay active in your faith. Serve in your church, build godly friendships, and use this time to grow in your relationship with the Lord. Proverbs 31:10 (WEB) reminds us that a wife of noble character is worth far more than rubies, and the same is true for a godly husband. Pray that God would prepare you to be that kind of spouse, and trust that He is preparing someone for you as well, if that is His plan.
If you have not already, consider seeking wise, biblical counsel from a pastor or trusted mentor who can guide you in this journey. And remember, whether single or married, your identity is first and foremost in Christ. You are complete in Him (Colossians 2:10), and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Walk closely with Him, and He will direct your steps.
