Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You say God does not see you and is not helping. But hear what He spoke to Jerusalem after all her whoredoms: "Turn thou unto me, and she returned not." He does not remember the former things when you repent. He is not as man, reproaching you for past misery. Only cleave to Him earnestly, and rivet your heart to His fear. The pressure you feel on every side, the perplexity, the smiting down, these are permitted by God for your discipline, not for your defeat. You have seen Jesus' miracle in your daughter. Is He weaker now? He is able even from the dead to raise up.
You confess a desire for revenge, that you do not want to see your husband. This is a babyish disposition, a mark of a little mind. To be overcome by passion is childish, but to overcome it is a sign of manliness. Do not fear the ridicule of men. When we forgive and do good even to those who do not perceive it, we receive greater things from God. He that truly thanks God for what he suffers will not revenge himself on the one who wronged him. Let your husband shout; let him say what he will. Look not to what they say, but to what becomes you. Your treasure is kept safer when you refuse vengeance.
Do not say you cannot continue living. The devil never despairs of your destruction; will you despair of your own salvation? Though your soul feels bound in a grave, though you stink and lie dead in anguish, approach Jesus as Mary did for Lazarus. Remove the stone of your insensibility, and cry out to Him. Even now, when hope seems buried, He will raise you up. Your trials are not proof that God has forsaken you. They are meant to make your fortitude manifest, as He tested Abraham to show his approval. Cling to this hope: we are perplexed, yet not unto despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; smitten down, but not destroyed.
