Your request for prayer echoes the cry of every pilgrim who knows that the way is fraught with perils, and that only the shadow of the Almighty is a true refuge. We join our hearts with yours, lifting you before the throne of grace, that the Lord who neither slumbers nor sleeps may be your keeper this day, and every day.
Consider well that you always need Divine protection, for safety is not found in the absence of danger, but in the presence of God. As it is written, under His wings shall you trust. This is not a mere poet’s fancy, but a covenant reality for all who rest upon Jesus Christ. The same hand that spans the heavens and measures the dust of the earth has appointed each hour of your day, and knows every step you take. There is no street so quiet, no path so familiar, but it holds hidden snares if the Lord be not your shield. Yet, if you are His, you are safe, safe in the tempest, safe in the calm, safe when life seems most secure, and safe when the foundations break up. The peril is not that God is unwilling, but that we forget to cling to Him. Always be afraid of not being afraid, and ever flee to Christ when you fancy yourself most secure, for then you are indeed safe.
But let me press a deeper matter upon your soul. While you long for bodily safety, do you not also pant for the safety of your undying spirit? The voice that bids you seek the Lord’s covering is the same voice that cries, “Return, return, return!” Perhaps you know Him in some measure, yet you have grown languid, and say, “If I did truly trust Christ, would I be so cold?” Ah, then return, that with infinite pity your Beloved may see what ails you, and with His dear pierced hand perform a divine surgery upon you, and make you well again. Or perhaps you have never truly closed with Christ, and the world still calls you back to selfishness and ease. Then I echo the urgent message: return now, everyone from his evil way. Life is but a vapor; you cannot too soon be safe. The mercy that holds you from sudden destruction this very day is the mercy that says, “Return, return, return.” He who would cover you with His feathers in temporal danger would far rather save your soul through the blood of the Lamb.
Therefore, let your prayer for safe travel be swallowed up in the grander petition: “Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory.” Trust Christ with your soul, trust Him implicitly, and then every coming in and going out is held in the grip of His covenant love. We pray not only that you return home this evening, but that at last you enter the eternal home, where no thief approaches and no storm assails.
