Sometimes we think once we have asked for forgiveness we should immediately feel light and free, but the feelings often take longer to catch up with the decision to turn to Him. It is normal to need to keep bringing that same simple, honest request to Him day by day, trusting that He knows the way out when we do not see it.

Your prayer has come before us and we have carried it to the throne of grace with you. You confess that you have brought trouble upon yourself and that you have long walked in a desert and in darkness, and you cry for forgiveness, for light, for freedom and healing through Jesus Christ. This is the very cry that God delights to answer.

The Scripture declares, He has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Darkness is not only the absence of light, it is the element of the prince of darkness and it has power to blind and to hide the way, so that a soul cannot find its path home. You are right to say that only the Lord knows the way out of darkness. He does, and He has made the way.

Hear the good news of forgiveness. There is forgiveness with God, and it comes from One who is authorized to absolve. When Jesus said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee, it was a sentence with no conditions added for the repenting and believing sinner. It is a divine forgiveness, for no one can forgive sins but God only, and He forgives freely for Christ's sake. It is a full and eternal forgiveness that removes guilt as far as the east is from the west. If you come with a penitent heart, trembling on account of sin and trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, that blessed sentence is spoken to you.

The ground of that forgiveness is the ransom which God Himself has found and given. As it is written, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. None would have thought of such a way, that the King's own Son should bear the penalty for the guilty, but God in love has provided it. Because Christ has borne the punishment, you need not bear it. You may be saved from yourself, from the power of your old sins, and from the enemy who would keep you in darkness.

You speak also of being long in the desert under chastening. The believer may truly say, The Lord hath chastened me sore, but he hath not given me over unto death.
