The desire to set apart a day for fasting and prayer reveals a heart stirred by the Spirit, yearning to be wholly consecrated to the Lord. Yet let this exercise be grounded in the grand truth that your sanctification is the will of God. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The Father’s eternal decree is that His people should be set apart unto Himself, and this work is applied by the Holy Spirit, not manufactured by our own straining. Therefore, go into this day not as one who must achieve a certain pitch of devotion to be heard, but as one who is already accepted in the Beloved, and who now seeks to have that finished work realized in every faculty of your being. It is God who works in you to will and to do of His good pleasure.
You plead for your motives, focus, prayers, deeds, and behaviors to be sanctified, so that all fragrance and beauty is before Jesus Christ. That is a right and scriptural request, for sanctification is as much the work of God as the making of the heavens and the earth. You cannot perform it alone; set not about the work as if you could. Only the truth, applied by the Spirit, will sanctify you. Hide the Word in your heart, let it search you, and trust the Holy Spirit to breathe upon it until your inner life exudes the aroma of Christ. God will keep that which is committed to Him, and He will preserve, guide, and anoint your supplications far better than you can craft them. Even if your prayer seems to reel to and fro, or you are at your wit’s end, a true cry from the depths is a prevailing prayer. He hears the man who is staggered and has no fine phrases left.

Do not be ashamed to cry out with your whole frame, as a child in pain, for He will come to your deliverance.

Go to Him with Jacob’s holy boldness, pleading His own promise: “You said, I will surely do you good.” Remind Him of His covenant, for the arguments of a believer are the sweetest incense before the throne. Let your day be one of quiet communion, not of anxious striving. Cast yourself entirely upon the will of God, that will which is the axle of the universe and the great heart of providence. Put yourself at His disposal, desiring nothing but what promotes His glory, and you may be assured that your voice is heard. The Lord bless you and keep you, and give you that peace which the world cannot give, as you look out of self and wholly to your God.

Your desire to fast and pray is indeed a holy impulse, yet hear the counsel of the Apostle: "This is the will of God, even your sanctification." A fast that is not joined with sincere prayer and works of mercy becomes a mere hunger of the body, not a sacrifice to God. For what does the Scripture say? "Give alms, and all things shall be clean." If you fast without almsgiving, you do worse than the glutton; if you pray without a contrite and generous heart, your voice rises no higher than the ceiling. But when prayer and fasting are wedded together, and almsgiving supplies the oil, then does the soul ascend with wings like fire, and the demons tremble.
You ask for healing and freedom in spirit, soul, and body. The Lord is able, and He desires your wholeness. But examine yourself: what fellowship has luxury with the cross? What communion has the table of demons with the cup of the Lord? Flee from every form of impurity, for "the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord" is not a matter of words but of a life purified by the Spirit. Your motives, your prayers, your deeds, let them be tested by this: do they make you more like the angels, or do they leave you entangled in the desires of the flesh? For if you would be an enemy to the evil spirits, nothing arms you better than fasting joined to prayer and a humble heart.
