Please intercede, Lord Jesus

Your prayer rises like a shield lifted against the arrows you describe. There is something deeply instructive in the way you have turned the attack back toward heaven. When a soul under fire responds first with prayer, it shows that the spirit is learning to recognize the battle for what it truly is. The enemy of your peace would love for you to answer in the flesh, to rehearse every wound, to scheme a way out on your own strength. But you have done what Nehemiah did at the first whisper of opposition. He did not always offer lengthy prayers. Sometimes a prayer was just a breath in a moment of crisis, an offering under his breath, and God heard it. That is not a substitute for responsible action, but it is the ground from which all wise action grows. After they prayed, they set a watch day and night. The practical guarding of your heart and your child is not a lack of faith; it is faith working wisely, completing the prayer with hands and feet.

Intercessory prayer stretches beyond our own needs and brings others before the throne. You are doing that even for those who aim their bitterness at you. Understand that praying for your enemies to hear God and follow Him does not mean you are asking God to bless a path that is still in rebellion. True intercession is exactly what you have expressed: it pleads that their eyes would be opened, that the blind judgments would be shattered by the light of the gospel, because their true peace lies only in surrender to Him, not in their continued hostility. Moses stood between a guilty people and a holy God, confessing sin because without confession there is no forgiveness. Your prayer that their hearts would turn to the Lord is the deepest mercy you can extend to them.

There is a tension here that the Psalms teach us to hold. David often cried out for God to break the teeth of the wicked, to frustrate their plans, to let their own arrows turn back on their heads. That is not a violation of a forgiving spirit; it is a recognition that you are God’s servant and that ultimate justice belongs to Him. When you ask for protection from their bitter arrows, you are asking the Righteous Judge to do what only He can do: to rebuke the destroyer. The finished work of Christ is your rampart. Because you are His, He will be your protection. The enemy may make a noise in the ruined palaces of this world, but the wall of your defense is built on firmer ground, and in a surprisingly short time, God can establish a strength that makes the attackers outside realize their efforts are futile.

As for forgiveness, let your own heart rest in this. Forgiveness is not a mechanical tally you must keep up with until you reach a certain number. It is the outflow of a life that has been forgiven an incalculable debt. The fact that you are wrestling to forgive, even praying for the ability to do so, is evidence of the Spirit’s work in you. The bitterness that others spew can indeed cause the enemies of God to blaspheme if we answer in kind, but your plea for their redemption shows a different spirit. You are not excusing their sin, nor are you elevating their judgment. You are placing it all on the altar. Continue to cry out from your cave, as David did. The Spirit ministers deep comfort in the very act of prayer. Often, before the outward circumstance changes, the last verse of the inward psalm becomes a sudden confidence: “God, You are going to take care of it.”

So set your watch. Guard what comes into your home and your heart. But pray without ceasing. Pray under your breath in the sudden moment of attack. Pray through the night if you are so led, alone with the Lord, wielding the Word as your sword against the strongholds that hold minds captive. Your prayer that God’s will would prevail is the only safe conclusion. It is the prayer that aligns you with His kingdom, His power, and His glory. He will still the avenger. He will perfect praise in the simplest, most vulnerable places of your life, and He will see to it that no weapon formed against His servant’s ultimate good can prosper.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing in prayer with you during this difficult time. It has been our heart’s desire to lift you, your child, and even those who have caused you pain before the throne of grace. We have prayed for God’s protection over you both, that His peace would shield your hearts from bitterness and His wisdom would guide your steps away from harm. We have also asked the Lord to soften the hearts of those who oppose you, that they might turn from their ways and find the same peace in Christ that you seek.

If the Lord has already moved in this situation—whether through a change in circumstances, a newfound sense of calm, or even a quiet assurance in your spirit—we would love to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be an encouragement to others walking a similar path. If, however, the arrows still feel close and the burden remains heavy, please know that we are still here to pray. You are not alone, and we will continue to intercede on your behalf, asking the Lord to intervene in ways only He can.

May God’s grace continue to sustain you, His love surround you, and His Spirit give you strength to forgive as you have been forgiven. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
