Philippians 4:13

We are so encouraged that you have brought Philippians 4:13 before us, for this is a precious promise and we love to stand on it together with you in Jesus' name.

We know this verse is often quoted as I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13, and we rejoice in the truth of it. Yet we also want to share the beautiful context in which the apostle Paul wrote these words, so that you may be even more strengthened. Just before this he said I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it. I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need. Philippians 4:11-12. Paul was not writing from a place of earthly triumph but from prison, facing hardship and need, and his point was that Christ gives us strength not only to achieve great things but to endure, to be content, to remain faithful and joyful whether we have much or little, whether we face victory or trial.

That is the strength we pray for you today, that whatever season you are in, you would know that His grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9. We are reminded also of the Lord's promise Fear not, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10. And we are told In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we thank You for Your Word and for the strength that is found only in Christ. We thank You that You do not leave us to face life in our own power, but that You dwell in us and uphold us. We lift up this dear one to You and ask that You fill them with Your strength for whatever they are facing today. If there is a burden, give endurance. If there is a calling You have placed on their heart, give courage and power to walk in it. Teach them the secret of contentment in Christ, to trust You in abundance and in need, in joy and in trial. Let Your peace guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus and let them know in a deeper way that they can indeed do all things You have called them to do through Christ who strengthens them. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We encourage you to keep abiding in Him daily through prayer and through His Word, for apart from Him we can do nothing but through Him all things are possible according to His will. John 15:5. Keep trusting Him and He will be your strength.

We're so glad you took a moment to share this verse with us. Hearing that Philippians 4:13 is on your mind encourages us, and we join you in thanking God for the strength He gives.

What we love about that truth is how personal it is. It isn't strength in general, but Christ Himself strengthening us day by day, in ordinary tasks as much as in hard seasons. When we pause to notice where He has already been at work, our confidence to face what is next grows. We often find it helps to look back for a moment and name those places, the small answered prayers, the patience we did not have on our own, the step forward that felt impossible until He carried us through.

If it would be helpful, you might take a few minutes this week to jot down two or three specific moments where you sensed His strength, and share one of them with a trusted friend or family member. Giving thanks out loud tends to deepen our own gratitude and encourage others too.

Father, thank You for being our strength. We praise You with our friend for Your faithful help and ask You to keep making Your power known in their daily life. Draw them closer to Jesus and keep their heart anchored in Him. In Jesus' name, amen.

The word you have laid upon our hearts is a most sure and precious word, and I rejoice to hear it from your lips. The apostle did not write, I can do all things through my own resolve, but through Christ who strengtheneth me. All strength apart from God is but derived strength, and therefore must come to an end, yea apart from Him it is not strength at all. But there is a strength laid up in Christ for all His people, and he that abideth in Him as the branch abideth in the vine shall not fail.

You must understand this text as the apostle meant it. He had learned in whatsoever state he was therewith to be content, to be abased and to abound, and in that holy contentment he found that Christ supplied all his need. It is not that we may do whatsoever our own will desireth, but that whatsoever the Lord calleth us to do or to bear, He will give strength for.

How then shall we have this strength renewed day by day. The prophet saith, they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. It is by waiting upon Him, by feeding upon the body and blood of Christ, by coming to God through Jesus Christ alone, that we find Him to be meat indeed and drink indeed. Open thy mouth wide and He will fill it, for there is nothing greater to ask for than Christ Himself, and you may have Christ for the asking.

Cling to Christ and say with holy boldness, I will not let Thee go except Thou bless me. Faith is the great holdfast that hooks a soul to the Saviour, and though that faith be but as a grain of mustard seed, if it linketh the soul to Christ it saveth the soul, and will by and by grow into something stronger. He shall carry the lambs in His bosom, and that which He most prizeth He keepeth nearest His heart.

Therefore let this be your prayer and your practice, to persevere in being nothing and letting Christ be everything, to persevere in resting wholly and simply in the power of the grace which is in Christ Jesus. He will not withdraw His gift, for the life He giveth is immortal and eternal, and they who are grafted into Christ will abide in Christ.

May the Lord increase your strength, that your strength may be spent in praising Him, and may He keep you abiding in Christ, persevering in holiness until the day of Christ. Cast yourself anew upon Him at this hour, trusting wholly in His atonement and His power, for whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
